Hunter Johnson Outlasts Federico Staksrud in Controversial: Hunter Johnson secured a spot in the PPA Mesa men’s singles final after a 10-12, 12-10, 11-5 victory over Federico Staksrud. The match featured intense play and several disputes over referee decisions, adding to the drama beyond the action on the court.
Johnson started strong, jumping to a 9-2 lead in the first game, but Staksrud mounted a comeback to win 12-10. The second game remained tight, with Johnson earning a game point at 11-10. Staksrud called a crucial forehand shot out, but Johnson challenged. The video replay upheld the call, prompting Johnson to request Head Referee Don Stanley’s intervention. Stanley overturned the call, sending the match to a decisive third game.

Controversy and Penalties in Game 3
Early in the final game, Staksrud received a technical warning for ball abuse. When players switched sides with Johnson leading 6-2, Staksrud was given another violation for foul language, awarding Johnson a point. Staksrud appealed, but the ruling stood.
After arguing the decision, Staksrud received another technical warning for calling the Head Referee without an overturned call, giving Johnson another point and an 8-2 lead. Johnson then closed out the match, advancing to his second straight PPA Tour final.
Players React to Officiating
Johnson credited his past wins against Staksrud for helping him regain focus after losing his early lead.
“I just kept reminding myself that I got to 9-2 and that I could do it again,”. “The experience and confidence that comes from having beaten him in the past helps me get over these tough matches just because when you’ve been in a situation before, you can take what you’ve learned and try to apply it to different situations down the road.”(Hunter Johnson)
Staksrud, however, expressed frustration with the officiating, claiming he faced unfair treatment.
“It’s really difficult to win if I literally have to play against Hunter, as he’s a great player, and I also have to beat the refs,” he said. “The refs are literally against me the whole time, so it’s tough. I don’t know, I think I just pay the price of being the non-American on the court. Honestly, that’s what it is.”(Federico Staksrud)
Staksrud further argued that line calls were inconsistent.
“Sometimes the line calls are 50/50, but today it wasn’t 50/50,” he said. “He was making out calls on balls that were in, so I had to challenge literally just to get a point. So, I’m doing that and then calling balls out that actually are out, and then they’ll overturn in his favor, so it’s like I’m fighting against everybody. It’s ridiculous.”(Federico Staksrud)
