Ben Johns and Gabe Tardio claimed the men’s doubles title at the CIBC Texas Open presented by Fasenra with a thrilling five-game victory over top seeds Christian Alshon and Federico Staksrud on Championship Sunday. The No. 2 seeds secured the win 11-1, 10-12, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4.
Johns and Tardio started strong, taking the first game dominantly. Tardio successfully attacked Staksrud up the line, helping his team set the tone early. However, Alshon and Staksrud responded by grinding out a close second game before cruising through the third to move within one game of the championship.
Decisive Fifth Game Seals the Win
With the match hanging in the balance at 7-7 in the fourth game, Johns and Tardio surged ahead, scoring four consecutive points to force a decisive fifth game.
In the final game, they regained their early momentum, using strong third-shot drives and aggressive net play to close out the match and win their first title as a duo in just their second tournament together.
“It was a battle this week. Yesterday, we had three three-game matches, and then this one went five. It’s really great to know that you’ve got a partner by you that will stick through in the tough matches and really ball out in that last game. I think we really finished strong.” – (Johns)
