Ben Johns Reclaims PPA Men’s Doubles No. 1 Ranking After Texas Open Victory

Ben Johns Reclaims PPA Men’s Doubles No. 1: Ben Johns has reclaimed the top spot in the PPA men’s doubles rankings for the first time since August 2024. After winning the CIBC PPA Texas Open with Gabe Tardio, Johns surpassed Federico Staksrud in the rankings.

Johns Climbs Back to the Top

Since Johns last held the No. 1 ranking in August 2024, several players, including Collin Johns, Dylan Frazier, and Staksrud, have taken turns at the top. Staksrud most recently held the position after overtaking C. Johns following the PPA Masters in January. However, after Johns and Tardio secured their first tournament win as a duo in Texas, Johns reclaims his place at the top.

The PPA rankings operate on a rolling 52-week system. Players earn points based on their best 16 tournament results over the past year. This system differs from “The Race,” which tallies points earned from January to December.

How the Rankings Shifted

Going into the Texas Open, Johns had 15,800 points. After protecting 400 points from his fourth-place finish in 2024 and gaining 1,000 points for winning the 2025 event, he experienced a net increase of 600 points, bringing his total to 16,400.

Staksrud entered the Texas Open as the No. 1 player with 15,900 points. Since his Round of 16 finish in Texas last year was not one of his top 16 results, he was not defending any points. His runner-up finish in 2025 added 800 points to his total, bringing him to 16,700.

However, the 2024 Veolia Austin Open took place more than a year ago, causing the points from that event to expire. Staksrud had earned 500 points from that tournament alongside Pablo Tellez. With those points rolling off, his total dropped to 16,200, while Johns remained at 16,400, officially reclaiming the top ranking.

Could the No. 1 Spot Change Again Soon?

Johns may not hold the No. 1 ranking for long. Neither he nor Staksrud is defending points at the upcoming Black Desert Resort Red Rock Open. However, Johns will not compete, as he and other JOOLA-sponsored players, including Anna Bright, Tyson McGuffin, and Collin Johns, will be in Asia for the JOOLA Pickleball Legends Tour.

Meanwhile, Staksrud will be the top seed in men’s doubles alongside Hayden Patriquin. A deep run in Utah, particularly reaching the semifinals, could be enough for Staksrud to reclaim the No. 1 ranking.

News in Brief: Ben Johns Reclaims PPA Men’s Doubles No. 1

Ben Johns has regained the No. 1 ranking in PPA men’s doubles after winning the Texas Open. He surpasses Federico Staksrud, who dropped to No. 2 after losing ranking points. With Johns skipping the next event and Staksrud competing, the ranking could shift again soon.
