14-Year-Old Adam Cheney Stuns the Pickleball World: Rob Cassidy partnered with 14-year-old Adam Cheney at the Black Desert Resort Red Rock Open, fulfilling a promise made in 2024. The duo played men’s doubles at the Little Valley Pickleball Complex, advancing through qualifying before losing in the Round of 32 to Julian Arnold and Rafa Hewett.
In 2024, Cassidy and Cheney first played together in recreational games. Cheney, aspiring to compete professionally, asked Cassidy what it would take to play in a PPA Tour event. Cassidy set a goal: if Cheney reached the 5.0 level by 2025, they would compete together at Red Rock Open. Cheney worked hard to meet the challenge.
“I said that if he reached his 5.0 mark by this year, we would play the Red Rock Open together,”. “That promise was kept up on his end and my end. We played together and it was awesome.”(Rob Cassidy)

Cheney’s Hard Work Pays Off
Cheney was thrilled by the experience.
“I’m so happy I got to play with him. It was awesome. All my friends were like, ‘No, you’re not going to play with him.’ But, I took him seriously, so I worked hard,”(Adam Cheney).
Before the tournament, Cassidy and Cheney crossed paths in Arizona, where Cheney shared that he had leveled up his game. His improved skills were evident on the court in Utah.
Although the loss to Arnold and Hewett was disappointing, the experience was invaluable. The pair plan to compete together again in Utah next year.
A Bright Future Ahead
“Adam’s going to be on the pro tour one day, so watch out,” (Rob Cassidy).
Cheney’s journey from a recreational player to a 5.0 competitor highlights dedication and mentorship in pickleball. His story serves as an inspiration to young athletes working toward their goals.
