Tournament Structure

In Open level tournaments, the schedule follows a traditional format: singles matches on Thursday, mixed doubles on Friday, gender doubles on Saturday, and Championship Sunday. For Cup and Slam levels, the format is progressive, with one round of each event played per day.

The recent tournament combined both formats, with singles played through the quarterfinals on Wednesday, mixed doubles on Thursday, and gender doubles on Friday. Saturday featured semifinals, and Championship Sunday concluded the event.

Benefits of the New Format

This hybrid format had several advantages:

  • Best Matches All Weekend: The structure ensured that fans enjoyed top-quality matches throughout the tournament.

  • Improved Storylines: Knowing the matchups on Saturday allowed the media, commentators, and operations team to prepare better for the semifinals and finals.

  • Player Breaks: Players, especially those in singles, appreciated the opportunity to rest before their semifinal matches.

  • Increased Media Opportunities: The weekend’s semifinals and finals created more chances for potential TV and media rights deals.

Feedback from fans and players was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed their support for this new format, and it will be replicated at next week’s PPA North Carolina Open.

The success of the hybrid tournament format highlights the potential for innovation in pickleball events. By providing an engaging experience for players and fans, this format could set a precedent for future tournaments, enhancing the sport’s visibility and appeal.
