Jorja Johnson and Tyra Black have powered into the women’s doubles quarterfinals at the 2025 PPA Tour: Veolia North Carolina Open, defeating Kaitlyn Christian and Christa Gecheva in straight games on Friday, April 4 in Cary, North Carolina.
The No. 3 seeded team won 11-6, 11-6, not only moving forward in the tournament but also avenging a recent upset loss to the same opponents at last week’s Black Desert Resort Red Rock Open.
Redemption Win in Cary
Johnson and Black, teammates on the Dallas Flash, played with clear focus and energy. After their surprise loss to Christian and Gecheva in Utah, they came into this match with determination—and it showed on the court.
“There was no upset Friday afternoon in North Carolina,” the event recap noted, as the duo dominated both games to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Eyeing the Semifinals
Next, Johnson and Black will face the winner of a key matchup between No. 5 seeds Etta Tuionetoa and Meghan Dizon and No. 9 seeds Callie Smith and Milan Rane. The upcoming quarterfinal will determine who moves one step closer to the Veolia North Carolina Open women’s doubles title.
Smooth Sailing for Now
While Christian and Gecheva had a strong run at Red Rock, there was no repeat in North Carolina. Johnson and Black displayed strong court coverage and clean shot-making throughout their match, finishing the job without needing a third game.
