Gabe Tardio Shocks Top Seed Federico Staksrud: Gabe Tardio advanced to the men’s singles final at the Veolia North Carolina Open after a thrilling 4-11, 13-11, 11-7 win over top-seeded Federico Staksrud on Saturday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
Tardio Turns the Match Around
After losing the first game, Tardio used sharp, angled drop shots to take control of key rallies near the kitchen line. The No. 13 seed jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second game but nearly lost it when Staksrud scored six straight points to earn match point.
Tardio saved that point and won three in a row to force a third game.

The 19-year-old credited his partners Ben Johns and Jessie Irvine for their support and advice during the match.
“[Ben and Jessie] made the difference, really. I think in the first game I wasn’t playing things right, so Ben came over and taught me a couple things, and that definitely made the difference.
