Gabe Tardio Shocks Top Seed Federico Staksrud to Reach North Carolina Final

Gabe Tardio Shocks Top Seed Federico Staksrud: Gabe Tardio advanced to the men’s singles final at the Veolia North Carolina Open after a thrilling 4-11, 13-11, 11-7 win over top-seeded Federico Staksrud on Saturday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

Tardio Turns the Match Around

After losing the first game, Tardio used sharp, angled drop shots to take control of key rallies near the kitchen line. The No. 13 seed jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second game but nearly lost it when Staksrud scored six straight points to earn match point.

Tardio saved that point and won three in a row to force a third game.

In the deciding game, Tardio trailed 4-6 at the side switch. He then took charge, scoring seven of the last eight points to seal the win and reach his second singles final of the 2025 season.

The 19-year-old credited his partners Ben Johns and Jessie Irvine for their support and advice during the match.

“[Ben and Jessie] made the difference, really. I think in the first game I wasn’t playing things right, so Ben came over and taught me a couple things, and that definitely made the difference. So, thank you to Ben and Jessie for always being on my bench and being by my side. This one is for them.”(Gabe Tardio)

Looking Ahead to the Final

Tardio will now face Roscoe Bellamy in Sunday’s men’s singles final. The win over Staksrud, one of the top players on tour, could be a key turning point in Tardio’s breakout season.
