Meet Rex Thais, a 14-year-old from Jacksonville, who is making a name for himself on and off the pickleball court. Recently, he won gold in boys’ singles and doubles and earned bronze in mixed doubles at the U.S. Open in Naples, Florida, solidifying his status as a top junior player.
From Golf to Pickleball
Before his rise in pickleball, Thais was a competitive golfer. However, he switched to pickleball, drawn by the sport’s social nature. “Rex has always been a very social kid,” said his father, Ricky Thais.
“With golf, he would never go out there and practice by himself or sit on the putting green or chip all day. But when he discovered pickleball and how social it was, the kid got addicted.” – (Ricky)
Building a Brand Beyond the Game
Thais’ social skills have helped him stand out, allowing him to build a brand beyond his competition success.
“It’s not about how good you are anymore. That’s just a piece of the puzzle. To stand out, to build a social presence, is a big thing.” – (Ricky)
Rex has embraced this idea, using bright outfits, energetic celebrations, and a lively personality to differentiate himself.
“In order to stick out, you need to be different somehow. For me, being loud on the court, screaming a lot, wearing bright colors, and just being able to separate yourself from the crowd.” – (rex)
Sponsorships and Future Plans
Rex’s unique style has already led to sponsorship deals, helping him get the gear he needs for competitions.
“It’s so weird, because I’m 14, first off, and to have someone say, ‘Hey, I want to support you because I think you have a bright future in sports,’ I have no words. I’ll prove to you guys I will become one of the most marketable juniors in pickleball and inspire everybody.” – (rex)
What’s Next for Rex Thais?
As Thais continues to dominate in pickleball, his growing brand and sponsorships will help him achieve even greater success. His combination of skill and personality is making him a standout figure in the sport and setting him up for a promising future.
