Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin Reach Quarterfinals Despite Early Scare at Orange County Cup

Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin reached the men’s doubles quarterfinals at the Select Medical Orange County Cup on Thursday after defeating Jay Devilliers and Grayson Goldin in a three-game battle at the Carvana Grandstand Court in San Clemente, California.

The No. 2 seeds lost the first game but stayed focused and turned the match around with scores of 9-11, 11-5, 11-9. Staksrud and Patriquin now move on to play Riley Inn and Luke Williams for a spot in the semifinals.

Close Match with a Strong Finish

Jay Devilliers and Grayson Goldin, playing together for the first time, started well and took the first game. Staksrud and Patriquin responded by controlling the second game. In the final game, they were behind 5-7 and 8-9, but scored three straight points to win.

The win avoided what would have been a big upset. Their next challenge will be against Riley Inn and Luke Williams, a pair who joined the main draw as Lucky Losers. Inn and Williams took advantage of their second chance and beat No. 12 seeds Tyler Loong and Spencer Smith on Thursday.
