Underdogs Jaume Martinez Vich and Matt Wright Stun Top Seeds in Thrilling Pickleball Comeback

Jaume Martinez Vich and Matt Wright advanced to the men’s doubles semifinals at the 2025 Veolia Bristol Open. They beat No. 2 seeds Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin in a close match on Friday in East Tennessee, winning 7-11, 12-10, 11-9.

Tough Match with a Comeback

The No. 6 seeded team faced a tough challenge. They were down 9-10 in the second game and trailed 3-8 in the deciding game. Despite this, they stayed focused and made key plays to win the match against one of the strongest teams on the PPA Tour.

Adjusting Strategy to Win

Matt Wright explained their strategy: “There are razor thin margins at this level, and you’re making subtle adjustments along the way. I don’t know if all the viewers can see it, but we saw a few things here and there early on. Hayden [Patriquin] was on fire—we figured we needed to get it away from him because when he’s on fire, it’s as good as it gets. We just tried to get the ball a little bit lower, move the ball around a little bit more, and it worked out.”
