Can International Players Break Through

Pickleball began in the United States, and American players continue to dominate the PPA Tour. However, foreign players such as Federico Staksrud, Catherine Parenteau, Gabe Tardio, and Tina Pisnik have already proven they can reach the top 10 rankings in the U.S. With the PPA hosting more international stops this year, the Malaysia Cup offers another chance for players outside the U.S. to win medals on home soil. The question is whether this will be the event where a non-American claims gold.

Singles Offers the Best Shot at an Upset

Singles matches may provide the greatest chance for surprises. In men’s singles, Christian Alshon and Tyson McGuffin are the top seeds, with Grayson Goldin also expected to be a strong contender. Former tennis pro Wong Hong Kit of Hong Kong, also known as Jack Wong, is another name to watch.

On the women’s side, Kaitlyn Christian, Hannah Blatt, Liz Truluck, and Zoey Wang lead the American field. Australian players Andie Dikosavljevic, Nicola Schoeman, and Sahra Dennehy will look to challenge them, along with Roos Van Reek of the Netherlands, who won the women’s singles gold at the Hong Kong Open in August.

Men’s Doubles Favors U.S. Teams

The men’s doubles draw is expected to be dominated by Americans. Ben Johns and Christian Alshon are the top seeds and heavy favorites to reach the finals. Tyson McGuffin and Eric Oncins hold the second seed but face a tough early match against Grayson Goldin and Jonathan Truong. Another interesting team is Zane Navratil of the United States paired with Indonesian player Armaan Bhatia. From Asia, South Korea’s Kim Eunggwon and Hong Kong’s Wong Hong Kit are strong contenders after finishing second in men’s doubles at the Hong Kong Open.

Women’s Doubles Brings International Pairings

Women’s doubles will feature more mixed partnerships. Anna Bright of the United States is teaming up with Roos Van Reek of the Netherlands as the top seed. Other notable pairs include Zoey Wang and Kaitlyn Christian, Liz Truluck with Hsieh Yu-Chieh of Taipei, Alix Truong with Ting Chien Wei of Taipei, and Canadian Hannah Blatt with Pei Chuan Kao of Taipei. This event is expected to produce several unpredictable results.

Americans Lead Mixed Doubles

In mixed doubles, Americans also hold the advantage. Anna Bright and Ben Johns are the top seeds and favorites to win gold. Christian Alshon with Kaitlyn Christian, Tyson McGuffin with Zoey Wang, and Jonathan Truong with Alix Truong round out the top seeded American pairs. Australia’s Max Wild and Danni-Elle Townsend could be the strongest non-U.S. team after their solid showing at the Proton Australia Pickleball Open.

What’s at Stake

The Panas Malaysia Cup highlights the growing reach of pickleball as the PPA Tour expands internationally. While U.S. players remain dominant, the tournament provides a key opportunity for athletes from Asia, Australia, and Europe to gain experience and challenge the world’s best on their own courts.

News in Brief: PPA Tour Asia Panas Malaysia Cup
