Underdogs JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier Stun Top Seeds in Sacramento Pickleball Thriller

JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier powered into the men’s doubles final at the Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open on Saturday, September 27, 2025. The No. 4 seeds upset top seeds Andrei Daescu and Collin Johns 5-11, 11-7, 11-6 in Sacramento, California, after a thrilling three-game battle.

Comeback Sparks Deciding Win

Johnson and Frazier looked in trouble after dropping the first game and falling behind 4-7 in the second. But the pair surged back with seven straight points on a single side out to take the game and force a tiebreaker. They carried that momentum into the third game, winning it with steady, aggressive play.

Staying Aggressive Was Key

Dylan Frazier credited their comeback to staying bold despite the early deficit.

“I think we just had to commit to the speedups. I felt like we were doing really well in the fast-paced exchanges.

I just feel like once I start pulling, anything that goes straight up JW’s way gets eaten up by his hands, so it was just a matter of playing a bit more aggressive.”(Dylan Frazier)

Double Final Day Ahead

The victory sends both players into two championship matches in Sacramento. JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier will compete against each other in the mixed doubles final and reunite for the men’s doubles title match. Their run shows their strength both as teammates and as opponents.

Wooden Paddle Connection

For Dylan Frazier, winning with a wooden paddle carries personal meaning.

“The paddle I first started with was the wooden paddle way back in the day on a concrete court in my backyard, and those were good times. So, it’s back to my roots with the wooden paddles.”(Dylan Frazier)

What Comes Next

Johnson and Frazier will now aim to finish their Sacramento campaign with gold. Their confidence and strong teamwork give them a solid shot at victory in both the men’s and mixed doubles finals on Sunday.
