Brooke Buckner Secures Bristol PPA Title with a Dramatic Comeback

Brooke Buckner Secures Bristol PPA Title: When Brooke Buckner stepped onto the court for her women’s singles final against Kaitlyn Christian, the odds seemed to lean slightly against her. The No. 6 seed Christian came out swinging, taking the first game 11-3 in less than ten minutes, a blow that could have rattled any competitor. But Buckner, the No. 5 seed, wasn’t ready to concede her second consecutive singles title without a fight.

The Comeback: Buckner Finds Her Groove

The match, originally slated for outdoor play but moved indoors due to rain, became a test of adaptability and mental toughness. Buckner responded to the early setback with a focused intensity, flipping the script in Game 2. In just eight minutes, she mirrored Christian’s dominance, taking the game 11-3 and forcing a decisive third game.

This final game would be less about skill and more about strategy, with the indoor conditions adding complexity. The court, as Buckner would later explain, had a “better” side—a slight but significant advantage that could tip the balance in a closely contested match.

Navigating the “Better” Side

“There’s one side that’s a little bit easier to be on in this indoor facility. I started on the tougher side, and I was just banking on being able to play my game on the other side to make the comeback. I knew if I could sneak some points early on in the third on the tougher side, then I would feel extra confident moving to the better side to close it out.” – (Buckner)

Buckner’s strategy was clear: survive the early exchanges, then capitalize when the sides switched. And that’s precisely how the game progressed. Despite trailing 4-6 at the side change in Game 3, Buckner dominated the remainder of the match, securing seven of the final eight points from her preferred side. The 11-7 victory earned her the title and showed her ability to adapt and overcome under pressure.

Family Support: A Surprise Boost

Adding to the weight of expectation was Buckner’s recent victory at the Selkirk Kansas City Open, which made her the player to beat. But if there was pressure, it was counterbalanced by the unexpected arrival of her family—husband Adam and their three children, Lucas, Ellie, and Margo.

“I had no idea they were coming, so it was a very fun surprise to have them all here,” Buckner said with a smile, the presence of her loved ones motivating her as she battled through the match.
