Andrei Daescu and Gabe Tardio Secure Men’s Doubles Title: The Las Vegas Pickleball Cup on Sunday showcased the continued dominance of Andrei Daescu and Gabe Tardio, who clinched their second consecutive men’s doubles gold medal. This achievement follows their previous victory just a week earlier in Utah.
Dominant Performance in Las Vegas
The ninth-seeded pair of Daescu and Tardio proved their prowess once again, overcoming the seventh-seeded duo of Dekel Bar and Zane Navratil. Their match ended with a thrilling scoreline of 11-6, 3-11, 11-9, 11-2. The victory showed their impressive form throughout the tournament.
Daescu and Tardio’s journey to the gold medal was nothing short of spectacular. They first dispatched the top-seeded team of Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson in the quarterfinals, followed by a victory over eighth-seeded Connor Garnett and Tyler Loong in the semifinals. Their path to triumph was a testament to their exceptional skill and teamwork.
Chemistry and Strategy on Display
The synergy between Daescu and Tardio is evident. “We both play back in Florida. We’ve known each other for three years now. We just practice all the time,” Tardio noted after the match. He elaborated on their complementary styles: “He prefers the left, I prefer the right. We’re both super steady and aggressive at the same time, so I think that’s the main thing.”
Daescu, 36, was quick to highlight his partner’s resilience, especially during a crucial third game. When the match appeared to be slipping away, Tardio’s performance provided a crucial turning point. Daescu commended, “Props to Gabe for hanging in there. We had a tough start in Game 3, but we came back. I think it was 9-5 [for Dekel and Zane], and we came back all the way back to 11-9, and that kind of set the tone for Game 4.” His praise reflects the significance of Tardio’s contribution, especially given his young age and the high stakes of the match.
Looking Ahead: Atlanta and Beyond
Looking forward, Daescu and Tardio are eager to build on their recent success. Daescu shared his aspirations for future tournaments, beginning with the CIBC Atlanta Slam later this month. “We’ve got to continue to train together. We live about 15 minutes away from each other. We’re riding some good momentum. We’re playing together in Atlanta, and hopefully we’ll pick up some more wins. Obviously, the field is super tough and competitive, so we’re not taking anything for granted,” he said.
Their successful season also includes silver medals from the Carvana Mesa Arizona Cup and the Selkirk Red Rock Open, adding to their growing list of achievements. With their impressive performances and strong chemistry, Daescu and Tardio are poised to continue their winning ways on the pickleball court.
