Hunter Johnson Upsets Top Seed at PPA: In a thrilling semifinal showdown on Saturday at the PPA Virginia Beach Cup, Hunter Johnson secured his spot in the men’s singles final with a commanding 11-6, 11-7 victory over the top-seeded Federico Staksrud. Johnson, the No. 10 seed, demonstrated impressive skill and determination, jumping out to significant leads of 8-0 and 6-1 in the opening two games. This remarkable start provided him with the cushion needed to clinch both games and earn a place in his second consecutive singles final.

Building Confidence

Fresh off a three-game win against Connor Garnett in the quarterfinals, Johnson spoke about his growing confidence in high-pressure situations. “I’ve had a couple of close matches this tournament, and I think that has helped me realize that as the match goes deeper and gets tougher, I can still pull out wins,” he reflected, highlighting the mental fortitude he’s developed throughout the competition.

A Grudge Match

Their last encounter at the Las Vegas Pickleball Cup in August left Johnson with a bitter taste; he had initially won the first game and held an 8-4 lead in the second before Staksrud made a stunning comeback. “I think I lost 14 points in a row to [Fed] last time, so I knew it couldn’t get worse,” Johnson admitted, showcasing his determination to avoid a repeat performance on Saturday.

“I just remained focused, and I knew that if I kept the momentum and kept pushing that my shots would land, and luckily they did today.” – (Johnson)

Looking Ahead

With the victory secured, Johnson now turns his attention to Championship Sunday, where he will face off against Ben Johns in pursuit of his second straight PPA singles title. The anticipation is noticeable, as fans eagerly await what promises to be an electrifying final.
