Adaptive Pickleball Makes History at PPA Tour: For the first time in history, the United Pickleball Association (UPA) sanctioned a tournament featuring a Wheelchair Doubles event as part of the PPA Tour. The event took place on November 4 at the prestigious Lapiplasty Pickleball World Championships, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of adaptive sports.
A Delayed Start, But Unyielding Spirit
After a rain delay necessitated a swift relocation to indoor courts, ten dedicated players took to the grandstand court for a round-robin tournament that showed their resilience and competitive spirit. Each player brought a unique story, highlighting not just their skills on the court but also their journey within the sport.
“It means a lot to play here today.” remarked Taylor Nichols, a prominent wheelchair pickleball player and adaptive pickleball coordinator for Chicken N Pickle. His words resonated deeply with everyone in attendance, showing the significance of this moment in adaptive sports history.

Advocates for Change
“There’s a lot of people that have advocated for it and it’s taken a lot of hard work for us to get on a recognizable tour like this. For me, as an adaptive athlete, I think this is the next step to get us as a regular division in some of the bigger tournaments. And honestly, I want to thank the PPA and everyone involved for making this happen.” – (Taylor Nichols)
His gratitude reflects the collective efforts of advocates who have tirelessly worked to bring adaptive pickleball to the forefront. Taylor Nichols has witnessed the extraordinary growth of adaptive divisions and remains one of the sport’s most passionate supporters.
Building Awareness and Inclusivity
Awareness is paramount when it comes to expanding the reach of adaptive and wheelchair divisions. Taylor Nichols emphasized that increased visibility is essential for the sport’s growth.
“The more people in the stands watching the action, talking about it, and sharing the joy of the sport at the biggest tournament of the year is a huge step.” – (Taylor Nichols)
This first Wheelchair Doubles event is not just a tournament; it symbolizes a vital step toward inclusivity in pickleball. As the sport continues to expand, its commitment to ensuring that pickleball is truly for all becomes ever more apparent.
