Sam Dia Strikes Gold at Lapiplasty Pickleball World Championships: Earlier this month, Sam Dia, a Casper resident, made a victorious return from Dallas, Texas, where he claimed the doubles title at the Lapiplasty Pickleball World Championships. Dia, partnering with Craig Plante, took on some of the country’s best pickleball players, emerging as national champions in the process.
A Journey to the National Stage
The path to a national championship for Dia began during the summer at the United Pickleball Association’s Wyoming State Championships. Alongside Plante, Dia dominated the competition, securing a spot at the national tournament. This victory in Wyoming was just the start of a remarkable run at the national stage.
“There were around 3,500 or 4,000 pickleball players from all over the country. It was really exciting.” – (Sam Dia)
Tough Matches and Patience on Display
Matches at the national championships were played in a best-of-three set format, and Dia’s team faced their fair share of adversity. On two occasions, Dia and Plante dropped their first set, putting them on the brink of elimination. However, both times, they responded with resilience, winning the next two sets to advance.
As the competition progressed, Dia noticed an improvement in their play. Despite being relatively new as a team, with Plante hailing from Buffalo, they found chemistry as the matches went on.
“We’d played against each other more than we’d played doubles together.” – (Sam Dia)
Winning Strategy and Championship Victory
The duo’s strategy was clear: patience. They relied on wearing down their opponents rather than taking an aggressive approach, waiting for their rivals to make mistakes. This method paid off, with Dia and Plante securing an impressive victory in the championship match with scores of 11-2, 11-3.
“Patience was the name of the game for us. We weren’t very aggressive, and were more concerned with wearing our opponents down.” – (Sam Dia)
By the time they reached the final match, everything clicked for Dia and Plante. Their cohesive performance led them to an overwhelming victory, and Dia described the moment as one where “nothing could go wrong, like everything was working.”
The Result of a Decade of Dedication
Leaving Texas with a gold medal, Dia could not have been prouder. He described the experience as “the greatest feeling,” a culmination of nearly a decade of dedication to the sport.
In addition to his success as a player, Dia has worked tirelessly to promote pickleball in his community as the chief operating officer of the Casper Pickleball and Sports Complex. Dia’s passion for the sport runs deep.
“I just love the game, and I wish more people knew about it. It’s multi-generational, fairly cheap to get into, can be played recreationally or competitively and is good physical and mental exercise.” – (Sam Dia)
Looking Ahead: More Tournaments and Teaming Up Again
While Dia is uncertain about participating in more large national tournaments due to logistical concerns, he expressed a desire to team up with Plante again in the future. For now, Dia is basking in the glow of his national championship victory, a moment that marks the high point of his pickleball journey.
