Milwaukee Hosts Inaugural PPA Open: 932 Players and 4,100 Fans Celebrate Pickleball’s Rise

Milwaukee Hosts Inaugural PPA Open: The Professional Pickleball Association’s Milwaukee Open, held at the Baird Center, has attracted a remarkable turnout of over 932 amateur and professional players. Making its debut this year, the tournament kicked off on November 14th and is scheduled to conclude with championship matches on Sunday, November 17th.

A Sport for All Levels

Professional pickleball player Julian Arnold praised the inclusive nature of the sport, emphasizing how easily players of all skill levels can get involved.

“With pickleball, anyone can just pick up a paddle day one and dink the ball around and have fun,” said Arnold. “From there, there’s just so much to learn. The entry level is low, but obviously you can take it to the level that we’re playing out here which is very impressive in my opinion.”

From Casual to Competitive

Kate Fahey’s journey to professional pickleball underscores the sport’s accessibility. The Milwaukee Open marks her first championship-level appearance after just a year of playing.

I started out for fun playing a local 3-5 tournament with my co-worker, became hooked ever since and now it taken me here which I’m really grateful for,” said Fahey.

Set to compete in the women’s championship round on Sunday, Fahey encourages players to prioritize enjoyment. “Just enjoy it. We’re out here and we’re playing a really fun sport,” she said. “It really beats sitting in a cubicle all day and this is how we want to enjoy our weekend.”

Building Connections

The Milwaukee Open’s appeal extends beyond competition. For amateur players like Patrick Diehr and Noah Dehli, the tournament is an eye-opener to the sport’s growing popularity.

“I’m honestly surprised by how many people have travelled not just to compete, but to watch this tournament,” said Patrick Diehr.

Pro player director Dillon Segur attributes much of pickleball’s charm to the bonds formed on and off the court. “The relationships you build are once in a lifetime,” said Segur. “It’s cross-generational and some of my best friends are fifty years older than me and I’d give anything to keep playing with them.

With more than 4,100 spectators attending so far, the tournament continues to prove that pickleball is more than just a sport—it’s a community.
