Hurricane Tyra Black and Jorja Johnson: Hurricane Tyra Black and Jorja Johnson have advanced to Championship Sunday at the 2024 Daytona Beach Open presented by the ROAR Organic PPA Tour. The duo, seeded #3 in women’s doubles, pulled off an impressive comeback against the #1 seeds, Anna Bright and Jackie Kawamoto, to secure their spot in the finals.
Strong Start for Bright and Kawamoto
The match began with Bright and Kawamoto taking an early lead, going up 8-4 in game one. However, Black and Johnson quickly regrouped and logged seven straight points to take the first game 11-8. They continued their momentum into the second game, starting with a 3-0 lead.
Bright and Kawamoto adjusted their strategy, moving Jackie to the left side, where she felt more comfortable. This change helped them score five points in game two, bringing the score to 5-3. Unfortunately for Bright and Kawamoto, they could not maintain the lead. Black and Johnson finished strong, taking the second game 11-5 and winning the match.

Team Chemistry Proves Key

“I have great chemistry with Jorja,”. She’s such an amazing partner; she also won best partner of the year, and best teammate in the 2024 Pickleball.com Endseason Awards, which is so true.”(Hurricane Tyra Black)
Both teams faced challenges landing consistent shots, with many points played at the kitchen line while the other team defended from the baseline. The chilly conditions, hovering around 55 degrees, may have contributed to this struggle.
Experience Makes a Difference
Daytona marked the first tournament for Bright and Kawamoto as a partnership, while Black and Johnson have a strong history of playing together, including as teammates on the Dallas Flash in the Major League Pickleball (MLP).
Black’s defensive skills were a highlight of the match. In a post-match interview, she shared how her tennis background helped her in pickleball.
“That’s actually how I played tennis, so that’s kind of what I brought into pickleball,”. “A lot of the shots really translated over for me.”(Hurricane Tyra Black)
