The USA Pickleball Rulebook has released its rulebook for the 2025 season, bringing key changes for tournament and recreational players. New regulations on scoring and player behavior, along with clarifications on existing rules, aim to improve the game for everyone involved. Understanding these changes is essential for ensuring fair play in competitive and casual settings.
Key Changes for Tournament Players
Behavioral Regulations: One significant update is rule 13.G.4, which allows officials to issue warnings or faults for player behavior after matches. This means players can be penalized for inappropriate actions, such as physically attacking an opponent, during their next match.
Forfeiture and Scoring Clarifications: Rule 12.H.1 clarifies that any game forfeited will be reported as a zero-point game, or 11-0. This change aligns with scoring systems in other sports and removes ambiguity about the consequences of a default.
The introduction of rally scoring (12.B.1) is another major change. Rally scoring can now be used in official USAP events, but not in double-elimination doubles, Golden Ticket events, or the 2025 USAP Nationals. Tournament directors can choose to apply rally scoring for games to 11, 15, or 21 points, requiring the game-winning point to be scored on the serving team’s serve.
Adjustments for Round Robin Competitions: The rulebook also addresses round robin competitions. Rule 12.C.4 now provides clearer guidelines for situations involving withdrawals or forfeits, making competitions fairer. This change is important, especially after incidents like Quang Duong’s recent withdrawal at the PPA Tour Finals.
The tie-breaking procedures for round robin play have reverted to the 2023 versions. This adjustment aims to ensure fairness in competition and that all players have equal chances of success.
Changes for Recreational Players
Recreational players will also notice important updates in the rulebook.
Clarifications on Net Faults: Rule 11.1 clarifies what constitutes a fault at the net, particularly during Erne attempts. This update aims to eliminate previous loopholes in the rule.
Updated Definitions for Volleying: The “Act of Volleying” is now defined under rule 9.B.1, stating that touching the non-volley zone (NVZ) before hitting a volley is no longer a fault. This simplifies gameplay for players, focusing on the action of striking the ball.
Signals for Readiness: Rule 4.C.2 introduces verbal signals indicating readiness. This rule helps players communicate better during matches, ensuring the server and receiver are prepared, which reduces confusion during gameplay.
