UPA-Signed Players Miss USA Pickleball National: Great Pickleball Divide

UPA-Signed Players Miss USA Pickleball National: The landscape of pickleball’s major end-of-year events has shifted significantly, creating a distinct separation between the USA Pickleball National Championships and the newly introduced PPA World Championships. This division reflects the ongoing rift between the United Pickleball Association (UPA) and USA Pickleball, two governing bodies in the sport.

A Historical Partnership Now Fragmented

For context, last year’s BioFreeze National Championships marked a collaboration between USA Pickleball and the PPA Tour. Since 2009, USA Pickleball has been the sole organizer of Nationals, establishing a long-standing tradition in the pickleball community. However, in March, the UPA, which oversees the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball (MLP), declared it would no longer recognize USA Pickleball as its governing body. This decision led to the creation of the UPA-A and a strategic move to establish the PPA World Championships.

The New Competitive Calendar

The upcoming pickleball season will see a split in major tournaments. The PPA World Championships are set to take place from November 3-10 at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas, a venue familiar to many as the site of last year’s Nationals. This event will feature amateurs, state champions, and all five pro divisions—women’s singles, men’s singles, mixed doubles, women’s doubles, and men’s doubles.

Conversely, the USA Pickleball National Championships will be held from November 10-17 at the Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Arizona. This championship will include amateurs qualifying through the Golden Ticket program, alongside three pro divisions: Pro, Champions Pro (50+), and Masters Pro (60+). The total prize pool for this event is set at $225,000. Notably, UPA-signed players, bound by exclusive contracts, will not be participating in the USA Pickleball Nationals.

Implications for Fans and Players

The bifurcation of these major tournaments may lead to confusion among fans who are accustomed to a unified championship experience. As the UPA and USA Pickleball chart separate courses, players and spectators must go through this new landscape where the distinction between events will be crucial.

News in Brief: UPA-Signed Players Miss USA Pickleball National

The pickleball scene is undergoing significant changes as the UPA and USA Pickleball split their major end-of-year events. The PPA World Championships will occur from November 3-10 at Brookhaven Country Club in Texas, featuring various amateur and pro divisions.

In contrast, the USA Pickleball National Championships will be held from November 10-17 at the Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Arizona, with a prize pool of $225,000. UPA-signed players will not compete in the USA Pickleball event, highlighting the growing divide between the two organizations.
