USAP’s Line Call Rules- Clear Guidelines on Line Calls and the Non-Volley Zone in Pickleball

USAP’s Line Call Rules: In pickleball, precise line calls are essential for maintaining the integrity of the game. According to USAP rules, any ball that contacts any part of any line, excluding the non-volley zone line on a serve, is considered “in.” However, a pickleball serve that contacts the non-volley zone line is deemed a fault, meaning the serve is considered short.

Understanding the Non-Volley Zone

The non-volley zone, commonly known as “the kitchen,” refers to the area on both sides of the net, extending 7 feet. This area is designed to keep players from executing smashes right at the net. The key rule in the non-volley zone is simple: volleying is prohibited.

Faults in the Non-Volley Zone

When a player volleys a ball, they are not allowed to step inside the non-volley zone or on its lines. If they do, it’s considered a fault. Even if a player’s momentum carries them into the non-volley zone or if any part of their body or clothing touches the non-volley zone after a volley, it’s also ruled a fault.

Furthermore, if a player’s momentum takes them into or causes them to touch the non-volley zone after the volley is completed, it’s still a fault—even if the ball is called dead before the contact occurs.

Legal Presence in the Non-Volley Zone

Players are permitted to be in the non-volley zone at any time, except when volleying. This rule ensures that players maintain a fair playing field and are not able to take advantage of close-range volleys from within the zone.

News in Brief: USAP’s Line Call Rules

USA Pickleball’s rules on line calls and the non-volley zone are designed to maintain fairness and safety. Any ball that touches the line, except for the non-volley zone line during a pickleball serve, is considered “in.

The non-volley zone, or “kitchen,” prohibits players from volleying within it, with specific faults applied when a player steps into the zone or is carried into it by momentum. Players may only enter the non-volley zone when not volleying.
