Early Life and Background
Alexandra Lowe Riley was born on 30 October 1987 in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of John Graham Riley, a native New Zealander, and Beverly Fong Lowe, a Chinese-American; the couple met while working with the RAND Corporation. Riley is of Chinese descent on her mother’s side and grew up between two cultural worlds that would later shape her identity as a New Zealand international.
Riley attended St. Matthew’s Parish School in Pacific Palisades before enrolling at Harvard-Westlake School in North Hollywood, California. She was named captain of the Wolverines soccer team during her senior season, earned two Mission League Offensive MVP honors, and was a two-time first-team San Fernando Valley selection. As a senior, she helped lead her squad to the 2006 Southern Section Division I final and was named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division I first team.
Outside of high school competition, Riley played for local youth clubs LA Breakers FC (formerly Westside Breakers) and Real SoCal (formerly SoCal United). She also represented New Zealand at the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, signaling her international path before she had finished her teenage years.
Ali Riley Career
Early Career (2009–2010)
Riley’s senior club career began in 2009 with the Pali Blues of the W-League. The following January she was selected as the tenth pick in the first round of the 2010 WPS Draft by FC Gold Pride. Playing as a left wing-back, she recorded three assists during FC Gold Pride’s run to the 2010 WPS Championship and was named WPS Rookie of the Year, an early marker of her competitive consistency.
When FC Gold Pride folded after that championship, Riley signed for the 2011 Western New York Flash. She became a finalist for Defender of the Year as the Flash swept the regular-season title and the 2011 WPS Championship. She re-signed with the Flash for 2012, but the league suspended operations before the season began, forcing Riley to look abroad to continue her career.
FC Rosengård Era (2012–2018)
In 2012, Riley signed with Swedish Damallsvenskan champions LdB FC Malmö, later renamed FC Rosengård. She opened her account by assisting the winning goal in the Supercupen and played her first full league season in 2013, when the club finished top of the table. She re-signed in September 2013 for two further seasons and lifted the Damallsvenskan again in 2014.
Riley won her second Supercupen with Rosengård in March 2015 and signed a contract extension that September. The club captured the Damallsvenskan for the third consecutive year, giving Riley her fifth league championship in just eight senior seasons. Across her time in Sweden she established herself as one of the league’s most reliable full-backs.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich (2018–2020)
On 26 June 2018, Chelsea announced that Riley would be joining the FA Women’s Super League club from Rosengård. Her single season in England added a high-profile European stage to her resume and showed her ability to compete in one of the world’s strongest domestic leagues.
On 18 July 2019, Riley moved to Bayern Munich of the Frauen-Bundesliga. The transfer continued her pattern of seeking top-level competition abroad and added German football to her international portfolio before her return to the United States.
Orlando Pride and Rosengård Loan (2020–2021)
On 10 February 2020, Riley signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional year with the Orlando Pride. The season was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, and on 22 June 2020 the club withdrew from the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup after positive COVID-19 tests. Unable to feature for the Pride, Riley rejoined FC Rosengård on loan in July 2020 to be with her partner during the pandemic.
Angel City Era (2022–2025)
On 27 January 2022, Riley was traded to Angel City FC in exchange for $15,000 in allocation money and a 2023 NWSL third-round pick, allowing her to play in her hometown for the first time. She started 19 of 20 matches in the club’s inaugural season, logging 1,591 minutes. During the 2023 season she scored her first Angel City goal in a 2–2 draw with the Chicago Red Stars on 17 September and helped the team reach the NWSL playoffs for the first time, where they were eliminated by OL Reign in the quarter-finals.
On 22 August 2024, Angel City placed Riley on the Season-Ending Injury list due to a chronic leg injury that had kept her out for most of 2024 and forced her to miss the 2024 Olympics. She returned to a matchday squad during Angel City’s 1–0 win over Orlando Pride on 21 August 2025. On 30 September 2025, Riley announced her retirement from professional soccer at the end of the 2025 NWSL season.
Driving Style and Strengths
Riley transitioned from forward to outside back during her junior year at Stanford and played almost exclusively as a left or right full-back thereafter. She combined defensive reliability with the attacking instincts she developed earlier in her career, regularly delivering crosses and assists, and she was comfortable switching between left-back and right-back for club and country.
Notable Events and Milestones
Riley earned her 50th senior cap on 27 June 2011 against Japan at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She captained New Zealand to the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup victory on 20 July 2023, a 1–0 win over Norway in the opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was also a finalist for WPS Defender of the Year in 2011 and a WPS Rookie of the Year in 2010.
