Austin Kenneth Wells was born on July 12, 1999, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. He grew up in a family with a strong athletic background; both of his parents were athletes at the University of Arizona. His father, Greg Wells, played baseball, while his mother, Michelle Wells, who is of Dominican descent, was a gymnast. The family has roots in Maxwell, California, where his grandparents were rice farmers. Wells has two brothers, Carson and Mason, who also pursued sports, with Carson playing baseball and Mason playing lacrosse.
Wells attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, where he played catcher for the baseball team. During his junior year, he earned recognition as the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year and was named a second-team All-American by USA Today. He showcased his talent by finishing the season with a .500 batting average, hitting eight home runs, and driving in 47 runs. His performance caught the attention of college scouts, leading him to commit to play baseball at the University of Arizona during his junior year.

Path to Baseball

Despite his promising start, Wells faced challenges during his senior year when he injured the elbow of his throwing arm, requiring surgery. Although he could not catch, he played as a designated hitter and still managed to bat .527 with 20 doubles, six triples, and four home runs, while scoring and driving in 46 runs. The New York Yankees selected him in the 35th round of the 2018 MLB draft, but he opted to enroll at the University of Arizona instead.
As a true freshman for the Arizona Wildcats, Wells batted .353, scoring 73 runs and hitting 15 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, and 60 RBIs. His outstanding performance earned him the Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Year award. After his freshman season, he played for the Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he was named a league All-Star and received the Robert A. McNeese Outstanding Pro Prospect Award.

Early Career (2021-2022)

The New York Yankees selected Austin Wells in the first round, with the 28th overall selection, of the 2020 MLB draft. He signed with the Yankees on June 25, 2020, for a $2.5 million signing bonus. Wells was invited to spring training in 2021 as a non-roster player and began the season with the Low-A Tampa Tarpons. He later moved up to the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades in late July. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wells had a solid season, finishing with a combined batting average of .264, hitting 16 home runs, and driving in 76 RBIs over 103 games.
In 2022, Wells started the season with Hudson Valley but was promoted to the Double-A Somerset Patriots in July. Unfortunately, he broke a rib during spring training, which delayed the start of his 2023 season with Somerset. On July 21, 2023, he was promoted to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

On September 1, 2023, Austin Wells made his Major League Baseball debut with the New York Yankees, recording his first MLB hit in his first at-bat against pitcher Justin Verlander.
