He grew up playing baseball, which is the most popular sport in his country, and was recognized as a talented pitcher and outfielder. Despite his success in baseball, Matos had a passion for basketball and moved to the United States at the age of 16 to pursue a professional basketball career. He relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he attended Hamilton Heights Christian Academy. Initially, he faced language barriers, as he spoke little English, learning basic phrases through Google Translate. Matos quickly excelled in basketball, becoming a top player at his academy and leading the state in double-doubles and rebounds, which helped his team win a state championship. He received 16 athletic scholarship offers from various colleges and was ranked as a three-star recruit, the third-best player in Tennessee and the 16th-best nationally.
Path to American Football
After committing to play college basketball for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Matos ultimately chose to join the New Mexico Lobos. He redshirted during the 2019-2020 season and made his debut in the 2020-2021 season, playing 20 games and starting 15, averaging 6.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Following this season, he transferred to the South Florida Bulls, where he appeared in 28 games during the 2021-2022 season, averaging 1.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. In 2022, Matos decided to switch sports and joined the South Florida Bulls football team as a walk-on. Initially playing as a defensive lineman and special teams player, he was later transitioned to offensive tackle. He briefly played on special teams and defensive end during the 2022 season.

Bayron Matos began his professional career in American football by participating in the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program (IPPP) in January 2024. This program aims to provide opportunities for international players to enter the league. Matos trained at IMG Academy, where he received praise for his skills and physical attributes. Standing at 6 feet 7 inches and weighing 313 pounds, he showcased impressive speed, running a 4.88 40-yard dash at his pro day, a time that would have ranked among the best for linemen at the NFL Scouting Combine. Although he was eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft and considered a potential late-round pick, Matos went undrafted. He was subsequently signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.
