Cal Quantrill Bio
Cal Paul Quantrill (born February 10, 1995) is a Canadian professional baseball pitcher who is currently a free agent. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians / Guardians, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, and Atlanta Braves. Quantrill played college baseball for the Stanford Cardinal. He was selected in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Padres and made his MLB debut with them in 2019.
Early Life and Background
Cal Quantrill was born in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. He attended Trinity College School, where he excelled in multiple sports, including baseball, hockey, and volleyball. Quantrill was a four-time varsity letterman in baseball, showcasing his talent from a young age. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 26th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft but chose not to sign. Instead, he opted to further his education and baseball career at Stanford University, where he played for the Stanford Cardinal. At Stanford, Quantrill made an immediate impact, starting 17 games in his freshman season. He became the first freshman to start opening day for Stanford since Mike Mussina in 1988. His performance included a 7–5 win-loss record and a 2.68 earned run average (ERA) with 98 strikeouts in over 110 innings pitched. Unfortunately, his sophomore season was cut short due to an arm injury that required Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for the remainder of the season and the entire 2016 season.
Path to Baseball
After recovering from his injury, Cal Quantrill entered the 2016 MLB draft, where he was highly regarded as one of the top available players. The San Diego Padres selected him with the eighth overall pick. Following his selection, Quantrill was assigned to the Arizona Padres and later promoted to the Tri-City Dust Devils and Fort Wayne TinCaps during his first professional season. He finished the 2016 season with a combined record of 0–5 and a 5.11 ERA across 12 starts. In 2017, Quantrill continued to develop his skills, playing for both the San Antonio Missions and the Lake Elsinore Storm, where he posted a combined record of 7–10 with a 3.80 ERA in 22 starts. He made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres on May 1, 2019, allowing two runs over 5+2⁄3 innings pitched. His first major league win came on May 25, 2019, in Toronto.
