Early Life and Background
Chase De Leo was born to John and Janie De Leo, who own a wholesale plumbing supply company. Initially, he played baseball but transitioned to roller hockey after his mother found baseball boring. De Leo played roller hockey for the Orange County Blades before making the switch to ice hockey. He began his ice hockey journey as a goaltender for the Norwalk Knights before switching to forward. As a youth, he played for the Los Angeles Selects minor ice hockey team, where he was a teammate of Eric Comrie. De Leo participated in the 2008 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, which was a formative experience in his early hockey career.
Path to Hockey
Chase De Leo played junior ice hockey for the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks from 2011 to 2015. Over four seasons, he showed consistent improvement, finishing his junior career with 251 points in 279 regular season games, including back-to-back 39-goal seasons. He also contributed significantly in the playoffs, tallying 58 points in 81 games and being part of the Winterhawks’ 2013 WHL championship team that advanced to the Memorial Cup final. De Leo was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. After completing his junior career in 2015, he was assigned to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League, the Jets’ top minor league affiliate.
Chase De Leo Career
Early Career (2015–2018)
Chase De Leo spent most of his first professional season with the Manitoba Moose but was briefly recalled by the Winnipeg Jets to make his NHL debut on March 20, 2016, against the Anaheim Ducks. He played one more game for the Jets before returning to the AHL. The following two seasons were spent entirely with the Moose, where he continued to develop his skills. As a restricted free agent following the 2017–18 season, De Leo was traded by the Jets to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Nic Kerdiles.
Breakthrough (2019–2021)
De Leo began the 2018–19 season with the San Diego Gulls, the Ducks’ AHL affiliate, and was recalled in March 2019 to make his Ducks debut against the Edmonton Oilers. That season, he set career highs in goals and points, scoring 20 goals and 55 points in 66 games. During the 2019–20 season, he continued to excel, setting a new career high with three shorthanded goals and serving as an alternate captain. In July 2021, De Leo signed a one-year, two-way contract with the New Jersey Devils, where he led the Utica Comets in scoring with 21 goals and 56 points in 55 games. He made his Devils debut on November 24, 2021.
