Daniel Pereira Gil was born on 14 July 2000 in Caracas, Venezuela. At the age of 15, he emigrated to the United States, settling in the Roanoke metropolitan area of Southwest Virginia. Before moving to the U.S., Pereira represented Venezuela at the U-14 and U-17 national levels. In high school, he played for the Virginia Blue Ridge Star club and Northside High School, where he earned recognition as the 2019 Virginia High School League Class 3 Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year. Pereira signed a National Letter of Intent to play college soccer for Virginia Tech ahead of the 2019 NCAA Division I men’s soccer season. During his freshman year, he started all 19 matches, scoring five goals and providing five assists. The Hokies achieved a ranking as high as ninth in the United Soccer Coaches poll and reached the third round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament before being eliminated by Stanford. His sophomore season was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but he still started all seven matches in the fall segment, contributing one goal and one assist.

Following his successful college career, Pereira was projected as a top draft pick for the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. On 30 December 2020, he waived his final two years of collegiate eligibility and signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer.
