Eriq Anthony Zavaleta (born August 2, 1992) is a former professional footballer who played as a center-back. Born in the United States, he built his career in Major League Soccer and went on to represent El Salvador at the international level. Over more than a decade, he suited up for Seattle Sounders FC, Chivas USA, Toronto FC, and LA Galaxy, winning major trophies along the way.

Eriq Anthony Zavaleta was born on August 2, 1992, in Westfield, Indiana. He grew up in a family with deep ties to soccer. His father, Carlos Zavaleta, played professionally in the United States and was a member of the El Salvador national team. His mother is Kristi Zavaleta, and he has one sister, Alexa, and one brother, Casey. He is also the nephew of Greg Vanney, the former MLS and U.S. national team defender who later served as his coach at both Toronto FC and LA Galaxy.
Zavaleta attended Westfield High School in Westfield, Indiana, where he played both his freshman and senior seasons of high school soccer. As a freshman, he scored 25 goals and added nine assists, and as a senior he posted 20 goals and 10 assists. Outside of school, he developed through several elite youth setups, including IMG Soccer Academy, FC Pride, the Real Salt Lake academy, and Columbus Crew, where he was part of the Crew’s USL Super-20 championship team in 2011.
Path to Soccer
On February 7, 2011, Zavaleta signed a letter of intent to play college soccer at Indiana University, joining a program with a storied history. In his freshman year with the Indiana Hoosiers in 2011, he started 22 games and led the team with 10 goals and 5 assists, finishing as the team’s leader in points with 25. His strong debut earned him selections to the College Soccer News All-Freshman first team, the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region first team, the Soccer America All-Freshman first team, and the Chicagoland Soccer News Player of the Year award.

He was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team, NSCAA third-team All-American, College Soccer News first-team All-American, and the College Cup All-Tournament team. Early Career (2013–2014)
On January 5, 2013, agent Ron Waxman announced that Zavaleta had signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer, making him eligible for the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. On January 17, he was selected 10th overall by Seattle Sounders FC and immediately added to the roster. He made his professional debut on March 23, 2013, in a 1–0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes. He was also briefly loaned to the San Antonio Scorpions during the 2013 season to gain additional match experience.
