Ethan Gray Evans was born on July 19, 2001, in Mount Airy, North Carolina. He grew up in this small town, where he developed a passion for sports at an early age. Evans attended North Surry High School, where he excelled in both football and track. During his high school career, Evans set several kicking records, including the longest made field goal at 51 yards, the most career field goals with 17, and the most career extra points with 77. His impressive performance earned him recognition as the Western Piedmont 2A Conference Specialist of the Year on two occasions. After graduating, he was invited to participate in the state’s East-West All-Star Game, making history as the first North Surry player to compete in the event in 23 years.
Path to American Football
Following his successful high school career, Ethan Evans committed to play college football for the Wingate Bulldogs, a Division II program. He played for the Bulldogs from 2019 to 2022, where he became one of the all-time best special teams players in the school’s history. Throughout his college career, Evans served as the starting punter and handled kickoff duties in all four seasons. His senior year was particularly notable, as he posted 67 kickoffs for 4,180 yards with an average of 62.4 yards and 44 touchbacks. He also recorded 77 punts for 3,518 yards, averaging 45.69 yards per punt, which ranked second-best in NCAA Division II.
