Eugene Omoruyi was born on February 14, 1997, in Benin City, Nigeria. At the age of one, he immigrated to Canada with his family. Growing up, he initially played soccer before transitioning to basketball during his second year at Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School in Toronto, Ontario. Omoruyi later attended Orangeville Prep, where he averaged 16.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, earning Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association First Team All-Star honors in his final season. He played alongside notable players such as Jamal Murray and Thon Maker and competed for the Advantage Titans on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit.

Path to Basketball

Omoruyi committed to playing college basketball for Rutgers University, choosing it over an offer from Loyola University Chicago. As a freshman at Rutgers, he averaged 2.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. His sophomore season saw improvements, where he averaged 7.9 points and five rebounds per game. Early Career (2021)

After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, Eugene Omoruyi signed a two-way contract with the Dallas Mavericks on August 13, 2021. He split his time with their G League affiliate, the Texas Legends. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to a season-ending injury in December 2021, leading to his release from the Mavericks shortly after.

Breakthrough (2022–2023)

Following his time with the Mavericks, Omoruyi signed a two-way contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder on July 2, 2022. His performance earned him a multi-year deal in February 2023. However, he was waived later that month. On March 3, 2023, he signed a 10-day contract with the Detroit Pistons, which was extended twice, culminating in a rest-of-season contract. His time with the Pistons was brief, as he was waived shortly after the season ended.
