Ekwonu started his college football career at North Carolina State University in 2019. During his freshman season, he played in the final seven games at left tackle, leading the team with 37 pancake blocks and earning a spot on the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America team. As a sophomore, he began the season as the starting left guard but was moved back to left tackle, where he again led the Wolfpack with 50 pancake blocks and 22 knockdowns, earning second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors at both positions.
