Early Life and Background

Jack Leiter was born on April 21, 2000, in Summit, New Jersey. He attended Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, where he excelled in baseball and was teammates with Anthony Volpe. In July 2018, he participated in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game, showcasing his talent on a national stage. During his senior year at Delbarton in 2019, Leiter earned the title of Gatorade Player of the Year for New Jersey, finishing the season with an impressive 6–0 record and a 0.54 earned run average (ERA). Despite being a top prospect for the 2019 MLB draft, he chose to commit to Vanderbilt University instead of signing with the New York Yankees, who selected him in the 20th round.

Path to Baseball

At Vanderbilt University, Jack Leiter made an immediate impact on the college baseball scene. He debuted on February 18, 2020, pitching five no-hit innings and striking out 12 batters in a victory over the University of South Alabama. His performance earned him the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Co-Freshman of the Week honor. However, the COVID-19 pandemic cut short his freshman season, during which he posted a 1.72 ERA over 15.2 innings. As a redshirt freshman in 2021, Leiter became a key member of Vanderbilt’s starting rotation. He pitched a no-hitter in his SEC debut against South Carolina, striking out 16 batters, and followed that with another no-hit performance against Missouri. His remarkable season led him to be named the SEC Newcomer of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American, helping Vanderbilt reach the 2021 College World Series finals.
