James Proche II was born on September 21, 1996, in Dallas, Texas. He initially attended Red Oak High School before transferring to DeSoto High School for his senior year due to academic concerns. During his time at DeSoto, he caught 18 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown, despite facing challenges, including suffering kidney failure during summer training camp. Proche was rated as a three-star recruit and chose to play college football at Southern Methodist University over offers from several other schools, including Colorado State and Louisville.

Proche redshirted his true freshman season at Southern Methodist University. In his subsequent seasons, he showcased his talent, finishing second on the team with 57 receptions for 709 yards and six touchdowns in his sophomore year. He made his NFL debut on September 13, 2020, against the Cleveland Browns, returning two punts for 26 yards. In his rookie season, Proche caught his first pass for a 14-yard gain during a game against the Tennessee Titans. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team due to his performance throughout the season.

Breakthrough (2021-2022)

In the 2021 season, Proche recorded 16 receptions for 202 yards in 14 games. He continued to develop his skills and gained valuable experience during the 2022 season, appearing in 15 games.
