She is Wales’s all-time record goal scorer and the most capped player in the history of the Welsh national side. Fishlock has been named Welsh Footballer of the Year on five occasions and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of women’s football in Wales.
Standing 1.58 m (5 ft 2 in) tall, Fishlock has built a career defined by longevity, technical quality, and a string of titles across multiple continents. Beyond her playing career, she has served as a player-coach and technical assistant, and she has become a prominent voice on LGBT inclusion in sport.
Early Life and Background
Fishlock was born in Cardiff, Wales, to Kevyn and Sharon Fishlock, and grew up with two brothers and three sisters. As a child, she began playing football alongside her sister before joining Cardiff City Ladies F.C. at the age of seven. She later played for Newport Strikers, where her talent continued to develop.
From an early age, Fishlock stood out for her technical skill and competitive drive, and she was fast-tracked into senior football while still a teenager. Former Cardiff captain Laura McAllister has described her as a technically superb and ambitious player, recalling that Fishlock was so good she was quickly moved up from the junior ranks. Those formative years in the Welsh capital laid the foundation for a professional career that would later span Europe, Australia, and North America.
Path to Soccer
Fishlock’s pathway to the professional game began in the Welsh domestic setup, where she debuted for Cardiff City Ladies in 2002 at just 15 years old. In her first season, she scored 19 times in 23 appearances, an extraordinary return that immediately marked her as a rising talent. By the age of 16, she was a member of the Cardiff senior side that won the 2004–05 SW Combination League Championship without losing a point, reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, and lifted the Welsh Cup to qualify for the UEFA Women’s Cup.
Her performances in Wales earned her a move to Bristol Academy in England’s FA Women’s Super League, and she soon attracted the attention of clubs abroad. In 2008, Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar approached her, making her the first overseas player in the Eredivisie. She won back-to-back league titles in 2008–09 and 2009–10, and was on course for a third straight crown before returning to the United Kingdom.

She scored on her senior debut against Reading Royals on 29 September 2002 and went on to net 19 goals in 23 appearances in her debut season. As of February 2013, she remained the club’s all-time record goalscorer, a testament to her long-lasting impact at her hometown side.
During this period, she also represented Wales at youth level, captaining the U-19 side before earning a senior call-up. Her progress through the Welsh age groups foreshadowed the leadership role she would later take on with the senior national team.
AZ Alkmaar Breakthrough (2008–2010)
Fishlock’s move to AZ Alkmaar in 2008 was a landmark moment, as she became the first overseas player in the Dutch Eredivisie. She adapted quickly to top-flight European football and won consecutive league titles in 2008–09 and 2009–10, cementing her reputation as a winning midfielder at the highest level.
She began the 2010–11 campaign on course for a third straight championship, before opting to return to the UK. Her spell in the Netherlands demonstrated her ability to thrive outside her home country and helped pave the way for further international moves later in her career.
Bristol Academy Era (2011–2012)
Joining Bristol Academy in 2011, Fishlock quickly became the team’s most influential player. In her first season, Bristol exceeded expectations in the FA WSL standings and reached the FA Cup Final, where they were beaten 2–0 by Arsenal. Fishlock was named 2011 Club Player of the Year, Fans’ Player of the Year, and was selected to the league’s All-Star Team, while also being crowned Welsh Women’s Footballer of the Year.
The 2012 season brought further individual recognition, including the FA WSL Players’ Player of the Year award, voted on by managers and players across the league. Bristol also recorded their highest-ever league finish and reached the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the Continental Cup, with Fishlock at the heart of their midfield.
Seattle Reign FC Era (2013–Present)
Fishlock joined Seattle Reign FC in February 2013 for the NWSL’s inaugural season and quickly established herself as a cornerstone of the franchise. She scored her first Reign goal in front of a record-setting 16,479 fans at Jeld-Wen Field against the Portland Thorns, and finished her debut campaign as a leading scorer with four goals. The Reign won the NWSL Shield in 2014 and 2015, and Fishlock was named to the NWSL Best XI in both seasons.
Throughout the 2010s, Fishlock split her NWSL seasons with high-profile loan spells at Glasgow City, FFC Frankfurt, Melbourne City, Olympique Lyonnais, and Reading, while continuing to lead the Reign. In 2021, she was named NWSL Most Valuable Player. On 24 November 2025, she signed a new contract with Seattle through the end of 2026, remaining the only player still with her original NWSL club. On 21 April 2026, the Reign announced she would retire at the end of the 2026 NWSL season.
Driving Style and Strengths
Although best known as a midfielder rather than a driver, Fishlock’s on-pitch strengths mirror the qualities associated with elite playmakers. She combines excellent technical skill with high football intelligence, vision, and the ability to dictate tempo. Her calmness in possession, passing range, and knack for arriving in scoring positions have made her a complete central midfielder throughout her career.
Notable Events and Milestones
Fishlock became the first Welsh player to reach 100 senior caps in April 2017, and on 9 April 2024 she became the first to reach 150 caps. On 14 July 2024, her 45th goal for Wales made her the national team’s all-time record goal scorer, surpassing Helen Ward.
