Joe Boyle Bio

Joseph Patrick Boyle (born August 14, 1999) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB). A right-handed starter and reliever, Boyle has built his career through the Cincinnati Reds farm system before reaching the majors with the Oakland Athletics in 2023. Through the 2025 season, he has compiled a 6–10 win–loss record with a 4.98 earned run average and 129 strikeouts in his MLB career.

Early Life and Background

Joseph Patrick Boyle was born on August 14, 1999, and grew up across multiple regions of the United States. He spent seven years living in the St. Louis metropolitan area, where he attended Fort Zumwalt West High School in O’Fallon, Missouri, before his family moved again. He ultimately graduated from North Oldham High School in Goshen, Kentucky, where he finished his high school baseball career.

As a senior in 2017, Boyle earned All-State honors, establishing himself as one of the top prep pitchers in the state. Despite that recognition, he opted out of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft in order to honor his college commitment. The decision allowed him to develop further as a college arm and provided him additional time to refine his mechanics before turning professional.

Path to Professional Baseball

Following his high school graduation, Boyle enrolled at the University of Notre Dame to play college baseball for the Fighting Irish. As a freshman in 2018, his work was limited to two innings in which he gave up four earned runs and eight walks. That summer he gained valuable experience pitching in the Northwoods League for the Kalamazoo Growlers, and he also appeared briefly in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Cotuit Kettleers.

In 2019, as a sophomore, Boyle made 18 relief appearances and went 3–3 with a 5.96 ERA, 39 strikeouts, and 27 walks over 25+2⁄3 innings. After the season, he returned to the Cape Cod League and pitched for the Harwich Mariners, where he posted a 2.14 ERA and 39 strikeouts over 21 innings and was named a league all-star. He pitched 8+1⁄3 innings for the 2020 season, posting a 3.24 ERA with 17 strikeouts and 13 walks before the remainder of the year was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He signed with the Reds but did not play in a game in 2020 because the minor league season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He made his professional debut in 2021 with the Single-A Daytona Tortugas, posting a 3.55 ERA over 12+2⁄3 innings while missing time with an injury.

Boyle opened the 2022 season with the High-A Dayton Dragons and was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Month for May. In early August, he was promoted to the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts. Over 23 games and 22 starts between the two levels, he went 3–6 with a 2.86 ERA, 153 strikeouts, and 84 walks across 100+2⁄3 innings. He returned to Chattanooga to open the 2023 season.

He posted a 2–1 record and 2.08 ERA in three starts for the Double-A Midland RockHounds before being promoted to the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators, where he recorded a 2.25 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 16 innings. On September 17, 2023, the Athletics selected his contract to the 40-man roster and promoted him to the majors for the first time.

Boyle made his MLB debut that night as Oakland’s starting pitcher at Oakland Coliseum against the San Diego Padres, throwing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts and two walks in a 10–1 loss. He was named the fifth starter for the Athletics before the 2024 season, but he struggled across 13 games and 10 starts, finishing 3–6 with a 6.42 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 47+2⁄3 innings.

Tampa Bay Rays Era (2025–Present)

On December 14, 2024, the Athletics traded Boyle, Will Simpson, Jacob Watters, and a Competitive Balance Round A pick in the 2025 MLB draft to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez. He was optioned to the Triple-A Durham Bulls to begin the 2025 season. He split the year between Durham and Tampa Bay, going 1–4 with a 4.67 ERA and 58 strikeouts over 52 innings in 13 appearances and nine starts for the Rays.

With Durham, Boyle made 17 starts and posted a 1.88 ERA with 114 strikeouts over 86 innings, earning International League All-Star honors. Heading into 2026, he was optioned to Triple-A Durham before an injury to Ryan Pepiot led to his inclusion on Tampa Bay’s Opening Day roster.
