Jonathan Trey Brubaker is an American professional baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees. Brubaker played college baseball for the Akron Zips. In 2016, he played for the West Virginia Power and the Bradenton Marauders, finishing the season with a combined 6–11 record and a 4.44 ERA in 26 starts. His performance continued to improve, and in 2018, he was promoted to the Indianapolis Indians after starting the season with Altoona. Brubaker made the Opening Day roster for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2020 and made his major league debut on July 26, pitching two scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. He finished the shortened 2020 season with a 1–3 record, a 4.94 ERA, and 48 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched. In 2021, he had a challenging season, going 5–13 with a 5.36 ERA and 129 strikeouts over 124.1 innings across 24 starts. The Pirates named him their starting pitcher for Opening Day of the 2022 season. That year, he made 28 starts, logging a 3–12 record and a 4.69 ERA with 147 strikeouts in 144 innings pitched.
Breakthrough (2023)
On January 13, 2023, Brubaker agreed to a one-year, $2.275 million contract with the Pirates, avoiding salary arbitration. However, he faced setbacks as he was placed on the injured list to start the season due to forearm and elbow discomfort. On April 12, 2023, he underwent Tommy John surgery, which ended his season prematurely. After rehabilitation, he agreed to a $2.275 million salary for the 2024 season.
