Justin Dowling was born to parents Glen and Sherry in Cochrane, Alberta, Canada. He grew up with his brother Jaeden and began playing hockey at a young age. Dowling played one season with the Airdrie Xtreme before joining the UFA Bisons from 2005 to 2007. He attended Bow Valley High School, where he continued to develop his skills in the sport.
Path to Hockey
Dowling was not selected in any NHL entry draft, but he played major junior hockey in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos. In his final season with the Broncos in 2010–11, he served as team captain and contributed 20 goals and 67 points in 63 games. Although he was unable to lead the Broncos to the playoffs, Dowling made his professional debut in the American Hockey League (AHL) after signing an amateur try-out contract with the Abbotsford Heat on March 25, 2011. He started the 2012–13 season in the ECHL with the Idaho Steelheads, but midway through the season, the AHL’s Texas Stars signed him to a standard AHL contract.

Early Career (2011–2014)
In his first full season with the Texas Stars, Dowling continued to impress at the AHL level and was rewarded with a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars’ NHL affiliate on March 26, 2014. He contributed significantly to the Texas Stars, scoring 50 and 46 points over the tenure of his initial contract. On May 31, 2016, Dowling signed a one-year, two-way contract extension with Dallas. He made his NHL debut on October 25, 2016, contributing one assist in a victory over the Winnipeg Jets.
Breakthrough (2016–2021)
Dowling scored his first career NHL goal on November 13, 2019, in a win against the Calgary Flames. After completing his ninth season with the Stars, he became a free agent and signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks on July 28, 2021. Dowling’s time with the Canucks was brief, as he left the team as a free agent and signed with the New Jersey Devils for the 2023–24 season.
