He was drafted by the Calgary Flames as the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Välimäki has also played for the Arizona Coyotes and has represented Finland in international competitions. He began his professional career in 2018 and has since developed a reputation as a skilled defenceman.
