Lauren Elizabeth Gogal (born July 15, 2003) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a center back for USL Super League club Brooklyn FC. She played college soccer for the Virginia Tech Hokies and began her professional career with the Washington Spirit in 2025.
Early Life and Background
Lauren Gogal was born in Annandale, Virginia, and raised in Haymarket, Virginia. She began playing soccer at the age of five for the Virginia Soccer Association. Growing up, her soccer idol was Lionel Messi, and she often played up two age groups, which was a challenge due to her smaller stature compared to her peers. In 2017, she joined the inaugural girls’ team at Virginia Development Academy, where she earned ECNL all-conference honors in 2021. Gogal was homeschooled during high school and also took some classes at Northern Virginia Community College.
Path to Soccer
Gogal’s early exposure to soccer and her dedication to the sport led her to play for the Virginia Tech Hokies from 2021 to 2024. During her college career, she made 64 appearances, starting 43 games and scoring three goals as a defender or midfielder. She also played for Lexington SC’s USL W League side, where she made a notable impact by appearing in all ten games and scoring two goals. On July 23, 2025, the Washington Spirit signed Gogal to a national team replacement contract, which allowed her to showcase her skills at a professional level.
Breakthrough (2025)
Gogal made her professional debut on August 19, 2025, when she started and played the full 90 minutes in the Spirit’s commanding 7–0 victory over Salvadoran club Alianza in the 2025–26 CONCACAF W Champions Cup group stage. This match marked a significant milestone in her career, demonstrating her readiness to compete at the highest levels of women’s soccer. Following her time with the Washington Spirit, she signed with the Utah Royals, although she did not make any appearances for the club before moving to Brooklyn FC.
