Luke Prokop is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (AHL). He was selected by the Nashville Predators, 73rd overall, in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. In 2021, Prokop came out as gay, becoming the first player under contract with an NHL team to do so.
Early Life and Background
Luke Prokop was born on May 6, 2002, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Growing up in Edmonton, he developed a passion for ice hockey at a young age. Prokop became a fan of Shea Weber, a right-handed defenceman, after watching him play for the Canadian men’s national ice hockey team during the 2010 Winter Olympics. This admiration led him to support the Nashville Predators and wear jersey number 6 in Weber’s honor. Prokop attended the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, British Columbia, where he honed his skills and prepared for a career in professional hockey.
Path to Hockey
Prokop was selected by the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL) with their first-round pick, seventh overall, in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. His early career included playing for Canada’s national under-18 ice hockey team in the 2018 IIHF World U18 Championships. After a successful stint with the Hitmen, Prokop was traded to the Edmonton Oil Kings on October 13, 2021.
