Mary Stoiana (born May 6, 2003) is an American tennis player. She plays college tennis for the Texas A&M Aggies and has been ranked as high as No. 1 in NCAA Division I singles and doubles. She has won one singles and one doubles title on the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour.
Early Life and Background
Mary Stoiana was born in Southbury, Connecticut, to Val Stoiana and Kathleen Morrone. Her father immigrated from Romania as a child and played college tennis at St. John’s University, where he won a Big East doubles title in 1986. He later began a coaching career, which influenced Mary’s early exposure to tennis. She started playing tennis at the age of four, learning from her father as he taught her older brother. By the age of nine, she was competing in United States Tennis Association (USTA) Junior Sections and transitioned to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit from 2018 to 2021, where she won three singles titles and one doubles title.
Stoiana gained attention from Texas A&M coaches after her seventh-place finish at the USTA Girls’ 18 National Clay Court Championships in July 2019. Until that summer, she attended Pomperaug High School, but she began being homeschooled to dedicate more time to her tennis career. She committed to Texas A&M in September 2020 and was ranked as the No. 11 recruit of the class of 2021 by Babolat.
Path to Tennis
Mary Stoiana began her college tennis career at Texas A&M in 2021. During her first year, she primarily played in the No. 3 singles spot, achieving an impressive record of 34 wins and 4 losses. She played a crucial role in clinching the dual matches that secured A&M the Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular season title and SEC Championship. In doubles, she partnered mostly with junior Carson Branstine, finishing with a record of 28–5. Her performance earned her a spot on the All-SEC second team and the SEC All-Freshman team, contributing to A&M’s advancement to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.
As a sophomore, Stoiana played in the No. 1 singles spot, achieving a remarkable record of 38–6 and a doubles record of 28–4. She helped A&M defend its SEC regular season title, receiving SEC Player of the Week honors seven times and was selected to the All-SEC first team. Her notable victories included defeating national No. 3 Lea Ma in A&M’s loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship. She ended the season ranked No. 2 nationally in both singles and doubles.

In her early career, Mary Stoiana made significant strides in collegiate tennis. She was selected for the USTA Collegiate Summer Team in the summer of 2023. During this time, she won the doubles title at the ITF W15 event in Lakewood, California, partnering with the No. 1 college player Fiona Crawley from North Carolina. Stoiana reached the singles final but had to retire against Hanna Chang. Additionally, she received a wildcard into the qualifying tournament of the 2023 US Open.
Stoiana’s performance continued to shine as she won the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina, during her junior year. This victory earned her the national No. 1 ranking in singles for the first time, making her the first Aggie to achieve this honor. She concluded the season with an impressive overall singles record of 38–4.
