Mason Englert Bio

Mason Alexander Englert (born November 1, 1999) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers. Englert made his MLB debut in 2023 and has quickly established himself as a promising talent in the league.

Early Life and Background

Mason Englert was born in Forney, Texas, where he attended Forney High School. During his senior season in 2018, he showcased exceptional talent on the baseball field, recording 168 strikeouts over 98 and one-third innings. Englert made headlines by breaking a Texas high school baseball record, throwing 55 and one-third consecutive scoreless innings, a record that was previously held by David Clyde. His impressive performance earned him a commitment to play college baseball at Texas A&M University.

Path to Baseball

Englert was selected by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB draft, with the 119th overall pick. He signed with the Rangers for an over-slot signing bonus of $1 million. Following his signing, Englert did not participate in any official games during the 2018 season as he took part in a new program designed for newly drafted high school pitchers. This program, referred to as the “de-load” program, focused on building a strong foundation for pitchers while allowing them to rest their bodies after a demanding senior season and pre-draft showcase circuit. Unfortunately, Englert faced a setback in April 2019 when he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, leading to Tommy John surgery and causing him to miss the entire season.

Englert’s breakthrough came when he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the Rule 5 draft on December 7, 2022. He made the Tigers’ Opening Day roster on March 29, 2023, marking the beginning of his MLB career. In his rookie season, Englert made 31 appearances, recording a 4–3 record and a 5.46 ERA with 41 strikeouts across 56 innings. He primarily pitched out of the bullpen until July 24, when he was placed on the injured list due to hip tightness. Unfortunately, after experiencing a setback during his rehabilitation, he remained on the injured list for the remainder of the season.
