Maya Joint Bio
Maya Joint (born 16 April 2006) is an Australian professional tennis player. A right-handed competitor, she has built a fast-rising career on the WTA Tour and ITF Circuit, reaching career-high rankings inside the top 40 in singles and the top 60 in doubles. Known for her composure on big points and her preference for hard and grass surfaces, Joint has quickly become one of the most promising young Australians in the sport.
Born in the United States but raised in Australia, Joint represents her father’s country of Australia and is based in Brisbane. She is coached by Chris Mahony and has accumulated more than US$1.89 million in career prize money. Her rise from junior standout to WTA title winner has drawn attention across the global tennis community.
Early Life and Background
Maya Joint was born on 16 April 2006 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in the United States. Her father, Australian Michael (Mick) Joint, left Australia at 19 to pursue a professional squash career that took him through Argentina, Canada, and Germany. In Germany he met Joint’s mother, Katja Joint, a German national who had played squash, tennis, and badminton competitively. The couple settled in Detroit in 2004, two years before their daughter was born.
Joint grew up in a deeply sports-minded household and began playing tennis in kindergarten on local Michigan courts, often hitting balls with her father using a squash racquet. As a dual citizen of Australia and the United States from birth, she was drawn toward her father’s country and trained on the ITF junior circuit. In mid-2023, at the age of 16, she officially committed to representing Australia and relocated to Brisbane.
Path to Tennis
After committing to Australia, Joint joined Tennis Australia’s National Academy in Queensland, where she trained alongside established WTA players such as Kim Birrell and Ajla Tomljanović, as well as top-ranked junior Emerson Jones. She reached a combined ITF junior ranking of No. 20 on 29 January 2024, underscoring her status as one of the top teenagers in the world.
In November 2023, Joint signed with the Texas Longhorns tennis team for the 2024/25 college season. In August 2024, she was controversially required to forfeit US$140,000 in US Open prize money to maintain NCAA eligibility, a ruling criticized publicly by American tennis great Andy Roddick. On 26 December 2024, Joint announced she would turn professional and forgo her college opportunity.
