Early Life and Background

Michael Harris II was born on March 7, 2001, to Michael Harris Sr. and LaTaucha Harris. His mother worked for the Fulton County School System as a special education teacher, while his father played college baseball at Alcorn State University. Harris grew up near Turner Field and aspired to play for the Atlanta Braves from a young age. He spent his childhood in DeKalb and Henry counties before attending Stockbridge High School in Stockbridge, Georgia. During high school, he was coached by family friend Marquis Grissom in summer leagues and received additional training from Grissom during the offseasons.

Michael Harris II was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the third round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Braves for a bonus of $548,000, choosing to forgo his commitment to play college baseball at Texas Tech University and his aspiration to attend veterinary school. Initially, he had been recruited by Louisiana State University solely as a pitcher. After being drafted, Harris began his professional career with the Gulf Coast Braves before being promoted to the Rome Braves.
