Early Life and Background

Rashid Khan was born in 1998 in a Shinwari Pashtun family in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. His family, including ten siblings, hails from Jalalabad and owned a tyre business until the Afghan war forced them to flee. They lived in Pakistan for a few years before returning to Afghanistan. Rashid grew up playing cricket with his brothers and idolized Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi, which influenced his bowling style. Initially more proficient as a batsman, he later excelled in leg-spin bowling. Rashid attended Islamia College Peshawar, where he studied computer science until 2013, gaining admission due to his sports skills. He came to prominence in 2014 during matches played in Peshawar when the Afghan cricket team toured Pakistan.

Path to Cricket

Rashid Khan made his One Day International (ODI) debut for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe on 18 October 2015, followed by his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut on 26 October 2015, also against Zimbabwe. He quickly established himself as a key player, taking the best bowling figures for an associate nation in an ODI match in June 2017. In March 2018, he captained Afghanistan for the first time in an ODI match, becoming the youngest player to captain an international side. Rashid’s remarkable performances led to him being named the Associate Cricketer of the Year by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in January 2018.

Rashid Khan’s early career was marked by rapid success. He made his first-class debut on 7 December 2016 against the England Lions, taking impressive wickets. In the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL), he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad, becoming one of the first Afghan players to participate in the league. He finished the tournament as the sixth-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets from 14 matches, showcasing his potential on a global stage.

Breakthrough (2018-2019)

Rashid’s breakthrough came during Afghanistan’s inaugural Test match against India on 14 June 2018, where he made headlines despite conceding the most runs by a debutant. He became the youngest cricketer to captain a Test match side in September 2019 during a one-off Test against Bangladesh. His performances in T20 cricket were equally impressive, as he became the fastest bowler to take 50 wickets in T20Is and later the fastest to reach 100 wickets in T20I cricket.
