Early Life and Background

Robert Hägg was born in Uppsala, Sweden. He started his hockey career at the age of 13, playing for Gimo IF in Gimo. During his second season, at age 14, he recorded 16 points in 32 games for Gimo IF. His early exposure to the sport laid a solid foundation for his future in professional hockey. In the 2010–11 season, while playing for the Modo under-16 team, Hägg had a breakout year, leading the under-16 league in assists and points by a defenceman. His impressive performance earned him the under-16 league’s defenceman of the year award.

Path to Hockey

Hägg’s journey into professional hockey began with his selection by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Following his draft, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Flyers on 21 March 2014. After the 2013–14 season in the SHL, he played the final ten games of the Flyers’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms. For the 2014–15 season, Hägg was assigned to the Flyers’ new AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, to further develop his skills. His NHL debut came on 9 April 2017 against the Carolina Hurricanes in the last game of the Flyers’ regular season.

Early Career (2012–2017)

He made a name for himself during the 2017–18 season, recording his first NHL goal in a game against the Detroit Red Wings on 21 December 2017. Hägg led all NHL rookies in blocked shots and was known for his physical play, leading the league in hits with 232 before suffering a lower-body injury in March 2018.

Hägg’s breakthrough came during the 2018–19 season when he played in all 82 games for the Flyers. However, the following season saw him as a healthy scratch in 20 of Philadelphia’s first 69 games.
