Tyler Guyton is an American professional football offensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs and the University of Oklahoma Sooners. Guyton was drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, where he was selected as the 29th overall pick.

Early Life and Background

Tyler Guyton was born on June 11, 2001, in Austin, Texas. He grew up in Manor, Texas, where he attended Manor High School. During his time in high school, he played both football and basketball. Guyton primarily played as a defensive lineman for Manor High School, helping the team reach the state quarterfinals. He was recognized as a second-team All-District 11-5A selection. Ranked by 247Sports as a three-star recruit, he was considered the 145th-best player from Texas and ultimately committed to play college football for the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.

Path to American Football

Guyton began his college football career at Texas Christian University in 2020, where he redshirted his freshman year, appearing in only one game. As a redshirt freshman in 2021, he played in eight games, starting one, while alternating between backup offensive lineman and H-back. He notably caught a touchdown pass in a game against Iowa State. In January 2022, he transferred to the University of Oklahoma to join the Oklahoma Sooners. In his first season with the Sooners, he started as a left tackle but transitioned to right tackle by the end of the season. He played in ten games, starting five, and demonstrated strong performance by allowing only two sacks and no quarterback hits. As a junior in 2023, he was named the starter at right tackle, where he protected the blind side of left-handed quarterback Dillon Gabriel. He played in ten games, starting nine, and achieved a career-high of 663 snaps without allowing any sacks. Following the season, he declared for the 2024 NFL Draft, where he was projected as a potential first-round selection.

Early Career (2020–2023)

Tyler Guyton’s professional career began when he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft as the 29th overall pick. He was drafted to succeed All-Pro Tyron Smith, who had left the team in free agency. Initially, his transition from college to professional football was challenging, as he began as a backup left tackle behind Chuma Edoga.

Breakthrough (2024–Present)

Guyton’s breakthrough came during the preseason when he took over the starting position after Edoga suffered a fractured toe in the first preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Throughout the 2024 season, he started in 11 of the 15 games he played, although he faced challenges due to injuries that affected his practice time and development. He lost his starting position from Week 14 to 17 when Edoga returned from injury but started in the season finale against the Washington Commanders. Over the course of the season, he allowed seven sacks and was called for 18 penalties, ranking third in the NFL for accepted penalties with 14.
