In 2014, Zack Hayes was selected in the ninth round (184th overall) of the Western Hockey League (WHL) bantam draft. Despite his parents encouraging him to explore other options, he played two games for the Canmore Eagles of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) before ultimately signing with the Prince Albert Raiders. Over his WHL career, Hayes recorded 29 points in his first 144 games and was named an alternate captain for the Raiders during the 2018–19 season.
