How Ajay Mark Is Sparking a Pickleball Revolution in Uttarakhand’s Top Schools

0
Ajay Mark Pickleball Uttarakhand Schools

Ajay Mark Pickleball Uttarakhand Schools: Pickleball, a sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is gaining popularity worldwide. In India, Ajay Mark is leading efforts to introduce the game to students in Mussoorie and Dehradun. Over the past year and a half, he has conducted workshops in multiple schools, inspiring young athletes to embrace the sport.

Bringing Pickleball to Schools

Ajay Mark, who served nearly 40 years as Head of Athletics at Woodstock School, has worked with schools including Woodstock, Wynberg Allen, Mussoorie Public School, The Doon School, Welham Boys’ School, Kasiga, Olympus High, Doon International Riverside, and Doon Girls’ School. Each workshop has sparked excitement, with students quickly learning the sport’s mix of agility, strategy, and fun.

“Pickleball is more than just a game. It’s a bridge between generations and an excellent way to promote health, skill, and camaraderie,” said Ajay Mark. “My hope is to see students not just playing but excelling in it. It’s great that The Doon School has taken the lead by making three brand new Pickleball courts on their campus. I’m hoping that other schools will follow soon. My aim is to continue Pickleball workshops and cover as many schools as possible by the end of 2025.”

Understanding the Sport

Pickleball courts are the same size as badminton courts (44 X 20 feet) with a net 34 inches high at the centre and 36 inches at the sides. Matches can be singles or doubles, played up to 15 or 21 points. The ball is made of hard plastic, and paddles are made of wood, plastic, or synthetic materials.

The game has unique terms like “the Kitchen,” a non-volley zone of seven feet on either side of the net, and shots such as “Erne” and “ATP shot.” It is suitable for all ages, easy to learn, and promotes agility, strength, and coordination.

Ajay Mark first encountered Pickleball two years ago in Duluth, Minnesota, where his daughters and their families live. He said, “Gloria Smith was instrumental in introducing me to Pickleball. Last summer, I participated in a Pickleball tournament in Duluth. This summer again I’m looking forward to playing regularly while visiting my family. One can get hooked very easily to Pickleball once you start playing this sport. This exciting sport came into my life at the right time after retirement. Pickleball came quite naturally to me since I play all racket sports.”

Growing Pickleball in India

Ajay Mark’s initiative comes as India prepares to host the World Pickleball Championship in Mumbai this November. His efforts are helping young athletes gain exposure and skills as the sport expands nationally. With more schools building courts and sports companies producing equipment, Pickleball is steadily becoming part of India’s sporting culture.

Through his workshops, Ajay Mark is fostering healthy competition, sportsmanship, and fitness, laying the foundation for a vibrant Pickleball community in Uttarakhand.

News in Brief: Ajay Mark Pickleball Uttarakhand Schools

Ajay Mark is promoting Pickleball in Mussoorie and Dehradun schools. He has conducted workshops at several institutions, inspiring students to learn the sport. Chennai’s Rise Up Championships Ignite Pickleball Craze—Sport, Music, and Lifestyle Collide

0
Rise Up Championships Pickleball Chennai

Rise Up Championships Pickleball Chennai: Pickleball is rapidly growing in India, attracting players across age groups from 16 to 45. The Rise Up Championships Pickleball event, a three-day tournament in Chennai, aimed to promote the sport while combining entertainment and lifestyle experiences. The event was created by Selvakumar Baalu, a former tennis player and motorsport team owner.

Promoting Pickleball in India

Selvakumar Baalu said, “I felt that anything apart from cricket doesn’t get the attention and support it deserves. There are a lot of downsides to sports in our country if it isn’t cricket. I wanted to start something that would bring a lot of people together. I have a lot of friends who play pickleball, but there weren’t any avenues to support talent and nurture it. So I wanted to create a platform where everyone could come together and support each other. And the kind of support could be anything from infrastructure to support and that’s how RUC was born. We wanted to bring like-minded people together and support each other.”

Veera, a thespian involved in promoting pickleball in Chennai, added, “Pickleball is the fastest growing sport and everybody’s taken to the sport right from ages 16 to 45 and on. This is the first PWR100 event in India and I’m thankful to the associations for bringing it to Chennai.”

Pickleball uses a tennis-like net and paddles but is played on a smaller court, similar to badminton. Baalu explained, “There is a lot of buzz about pickleball, as it is something that is very affordable. You don’t need a huge space; it can be done both indoors and outdoors. Pickleball, unlike tennis or badminton, the chance of injuries are less. The access to it is easier too. We use a plastic ball, and you get hurt easily. And that is one of the reasons why anyone can get into it without much training.”

Creating a Lifestyle Experience

The event combined sports, entertainment, and lifestyle. Baalu said, “The whole idea about putting together a lifestyle by combining the glitz and glamour to give a festive feel to any sport. Pickleball is our first venture, and we look to take it to a bigger scale. Chennai could be termed as the cultural capital, and we have the second-longest beach. People talk about going to Goa or Bangalore in terms of concerts, and we thought Chennai should enter the fray too. And so it is a combination of sport and entertainment.”

Veera added, “Mr Selva was set on making the first of its kind event as exotic as possible and give the audience a lifestyle experience. And as for Chennai, we like to celebrate the coastline of the city and hence we went all out to create a space for the event with the pickleball court by the bay. We wanted to make it a lifestyle experience for everyone who comes in and to enjoy a full day with the families. The synergy of sport and entertainment has been a factor globally and is gaining traction in India as a lifestyle proposition in recent years. IPL changed the game for everyone with film stars buying into it.”

A music festival alongside the tournament featured local bands, headlined by Masala Coffee. Baalu said, “We identified a lot of bands that have been around, and we were surprised to see how much the crowd loved the local bands.”

The Future of Pickleball in India

With players from Chennai set to represent India at the World Cup in Miami, stakeholders see pickleball as a growing sport. Veera said, “India’s got the infrastructure, the talent and the thirst. It is a lot of time and energy that’s got to be spent in the next couple of years, but I feel India has got the talent for every sport in the world. Youngsters are taking more to sports now. India is getting sportified, Tamil Nadu is getting sportified. And the way I see it, this is a great time for players, associations and government organisations to get into the sport.”

Baalu added, “Tamil Nadu government has always been very supportive of sports. And the tournament here doesn’t require as much support as we created this on a lawn. Hence, these type of tournaments do not necessarily need a lot of government involvement. India is big on sport. There’s at least one sportsman in every family, so I guess it comes naturally to us. We have gone from hardcore academics to a more balanced lifestyle inculcating sport, so I guess it is just up and up here on out.”

News in Brief: Rise Up Championships Pickleball Chennai

Pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity in India. The Rise Up Championships in Chennai, organized by Selvakumar Baalu and supported by Veera, combined sports, music, and lifestyle experiences. The event attracted players aged 16 to 45 and showcased India’s growing talent, infrastructure, and potential in pickleball.

Teamwork Transforms Lewisburg: New Pickleball Courts Unveiled After Unlikely Collaboration

Lewisburg Pickleball Courts Community Project

Lewisburg Pickleball Courts Community Project: A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the newly built basketball and pickleball courts in Community Park. Lewisburg Municipal Manager Jeff Sewert said the courts were made possible through collaboration between the village, Harrison Township, and local contractors, with funding from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars.

Planning and Collaboration

Jeff Sewert said the village applied for a state grant in 2024 for the courts, playground equipment, and fencing, but did not receive funding

. “With that said, we went to work with our council liaison to the park board Ted Thies on what our first priority would be out of those three,”(Jeff Sewert).

The village and board agreed the basketball and pickleball courts were the top priority.

Sewert credited Thies and Clint Baughman, who he called the “park ranger” for his dedication, for leading the project. Harrison Township trustees also joined the effort.

“Brady said we need to work together with the village, so let’s build the pickleball courts and the basketball court together,”(Jeff Sewert)

referring to Harrison Township Trustee President Brady Creech.

Contractors and Construction

Two local contractors helped complete the project. Steve Booso, owner of Booso Concrete in Lewisburg, supplied the cement and donated labor for the pad. Eagle Fence, owned by Kyle Clevenger, installed the fencing.

“Whenever we need some fencing, emergency repair, new fencing, whatever, the man to go to is Kyle Clevenger,”(Jeff Sewert).

Several local businesses also supported the project.

Costs and Community Support

The project cost approximately $100,000, funded by both the village and Harrison Township through ARPA dollars. Sewert thanked the park board, Mayor Dennis Roberts, and council for making the courts possible.

“The basketball court and pickleball courts are another great amenity to our park,” (Dennis Roberts).

Ted Thies praised the contractors’ work.

“You did a heck of a job, not only on the pad, but getting rid of the dirt and finding a place for it,”.

Thies also encouraged more community projects.

“We need more ideas for projects and new people to get involved so we have some new projects to work on,”(Ted Thies).

Lewisburg and Harrison Township opened new basketball and pickleball courts at Community Park. Local contractors Steve Booso and Kyle Clevenger helped complete the $100,000 project with ARPA funding. Leverett Debates Future of Beloved Greenspace as Pickleball Courts Spark Excitement and Concern

Leverett Pickleball Courts Proposal

Leverett Pickleball Courts Proposal: Pickleball enthusiasts in Leverett are pushing to build two courts on land between the Leverett Library and Leverett Elementary School on Montague Road. The group plans to seek Community Preservation Act funding at the Annual Town Meeting next spring, along with other grants, for a project estimated at $75,000.

Plans for the Courts

The proposed courts would include one that is wheelchair accessible and connect to an accessible trail from the library. Players would park along the street. About 20 people currently play weekly matches on Saturday mornings at the school.

Peter Sylvan of Teawaddle Hill Road said,

“It’s quite popular; we think it would get a fair amount of usage.”

Advocates noted that similar projects have been completed in other towns in the region.

Concerns From Town Officials

Support from residents and municipal boards is not guaranteed. The Council on Aging is considering using the land for senior activities. There is also a preliminary idea to move the Field Building, the former library at 1 Shutesbury Road, to the site to expand municipal buildings.

Selectboard member Tom Hankinson called the plan a great idea but raised questions about upkeep. Selectboard Chair Pat Duffy noted that neighborhood support will be key and said,

“My biggest concern with this is noise and our noise bylaw.”

Town Meeting voters must approve any changes to the field, a measure passed in 2021 to protect greenspace for possible future uses like solar arrays. Selectboard member Jed Proujansky said,

“My main worry is possibly losing the one large gathering spot for the community,”

citing its use during the 250th anniversary celebrations in 2024. Planning Board member Richard Nathhorst questioned the long-term value, saying,

“It’s going to be a fad and gone in a few years.”

Next Steps

The committee will continue seeking funding and support from residents and town boards. If approved, the project would provide dedicated pickleball space in Leverett while balancing community needs for recreation and greenspace.

News in Brief: Leverett Pickleball Courts Proposal

Leverett residents are pushing to build two pickleball courts between the library and elementary school. The $75,000 project would include a wheelchair-accessible court. Town officials and residents have raised concerns about noise, upkeep, and use of the greenspace, while supporters highlight the growing popularity of the sport.

Navy Veteran Reunites With Firefighters Who Saved His Life on the Pickleball Court

Carey Williams Pickleball Rescue Reunion

Carey Williams Pickleball Rescue Reunion: Carey Williams, a 70-year-old Navy veteran and retired schoolteacher, reunited Monday with Miami Township firefighters Michael Tankersley and Jacob Myrick at a Clermont County firehouse. The firefighters saved Williams’ life in July after he collapsed during a pickleball game and went into sudden cardiac arrest.

The Life-Saving Incident

In July, Williams was playing pickleball at Sawyer Point when he suddenly felt faint.

“We were on Game 6 and I just felt like I was going to pass out. I had no pain or anything. I was out like a light.”(Carey Williams)

Tankersley and Myrick, off-duty at the time, quickly acted. They called for an automated external defibrillator, which a bystander brought, and successfully revived Williams.

“They touched my heart, my life, my mind, so I got a special place for these guys in my heart and my memory because I wouldn’t be here without them,” (Carey Williams).

Williams later discovered he had five blockages in his heart and spent a month in the hospital recovering.

The Reunion

Monday marked the first meeting since that day. Myrick said,

“I don’t really get nervous, but my heart was racing like Carey was saying when we just met.”

Michael Tankersley added,

“We’ve been looking forward to it for a long time.”

Williams toured the station, sharing smiles and laughs, and expressed his gratitude.

“I would adopt them if I could,” he said.

“He’s able to stand. He’s able to walk, talk, live his life, be able to be with his family, and that’s the best we could have asked for.”(Jacob Myrick)

The Bigger Message

The Miami Township Fire Department highlighted the importance of knowing CPR and having AEDs available in public areas. Williams plans to return to the pickleball courts once his doctors give him the all-clear. “God is good. God is good,” he said, reflecting on his second chance at life.

News in Brief: Carey Williams Pickleball Rescue Reunion

Carey Williams, a 70-year-old Navy veteran, reunited with Miami Township firefighters Michael Tankersley and Jacob Myrick, who saved him during a July pickleball game. Invermere Greenlights Long-Awaited Pynelogs Rotary Ball Park Pickleball Courts—Here’s What’s Coming by 2027

0
Pynelogs Rotary Ball Park Pickleball Courts

Pynelogs Rotary Ball Park Pickleball Courts: The District of Invermere has chosen a site near Pynelogs Rotary Ball Park to build dedicated pickleball courts after years of requests from local players. The plan calls for eight tournament-level courts to be built on a parking lot near the ball diamond, with construction targeted for summer 2027.

Long-Standing Push for Courts

For years, the Invermere Pickleball Club has used the Mount Nelson Athletic Park courts for outdoor play. This has caused scheduling conflicts with other groups like basketball players. Club members and municipal staff reviewed several possible sites before recommending the ball diamond area as the most practical option.

Council Discussions and Concerns

Councillor Theresa Wood met with players to evaluate locations at Mount Nelson Athletic Park, the ball diamond, the Lake Windermere Resort Lands, and the Highway 93/95 crossroads. She said the ball diamond location is farther from homes, wheelchair accessible, and owned by the district.

District staff agreed, citing “moderate infrastructure needs” and lower costs compared to other sites. Cost estimates range from $210,000 to $295,000 for the ball diamond, compared to $420,000–$600,000 at the crossroads and over $500,000 at the resort lands.

“I do really like that location. It’s not being used very much,”

said Councillor Grant Kelly.

“Sound mitigation is going to be costly, but it is important . . . sound will travel. But sound will travel everywhere, unless you have trees – really big, thick trees — all around it.”

Councillor Gerry Taft raised the issue of public consultation, pointing to past reversals on other projects.

“Are we going to flip and flop a lot on this, if we suddenly get feedback, or are we ready to decide now?”(Gerry Taft).

Chief administrative officer Dean McKinley noted that while nearby residents in the Fort Point neighborhood previously opposed pickleball close to their homes, similar resistance is common in other communities.

“But it seems to be the best of all the locations,” (Dean McKinley).

Next Steps for the Project

Council voted to move ahead with the ball diamond location. The district will now work with the Invermere Pickleball Club on fundraising. An unused $80,000 from the 2022–2024 resort development strategy is already available to support the project.

Why It Matters

The decision marks progress in creating dedicated pickleball courts for the growing sport in Invermere. The project aims to ease conflicts with other sports, provide space for tournaments, and strengthen recreational opportunities for the community.

News in Brief: Pynelogs Rotary Ball Park Pickleball Courts

The District of Invermere approved plans to build eight pickleball courts near Pynelogs Rotary Ball Park. The project, supported by $80,000 in existing funds, is expected by summer 2027. Officials chose the location for its lower cost, accessibility, and distance from homes after years of requests from local players.

Collin Johns Reveals the Forehand Roll Drop That’s Transforming Pickleball Rallies

0
Collin Johns Forehand Roll Drop Technique

Collin Johns Forehand Roll Drop Technique: Professional pickleball player Collin Johns has shared insights on the forehand roll drop, a shot that can help players gain control during rallies. This topspin drop shot, when executed correctly, provides both safety over the net and offensive potential, making it a valuable tool for players at all levels.

What Is the Forehand Roll Drop?

The forehand roll drop is a drop shot played with topspin from the baseline into the kitchen. Unlike a flat push drop, it adds spin that makes the ball fall sharply, often at an opponent’s feet. This approach creates more margin over the net, applies pressure, and proves especially effective in higher-level play.

How to Create Topspin

The key to topspin lies in paddle angle and follow-through. A flat or slightly closed paddle face allows the ball to drag upward on contact, creating spin. Collin Johns notes that players should finish high on the same side of their body, avoiding a windshield-wiper motion. Using the legs to lift also adds spin and control.

Trajectory and Contact

The ball’s path depends on starting low and lifting underneath. The ideal shot arcs slightly, then drops into the kitchen with topspin. To stay consistent, players must strike from a comfortable stance by rotating the hips, shoulders, and core, while moving their feet to avoid overreaching.

Why the Shot Matters

The forehand roll drop helps players clear the net safely while landing shots at their opponent’s feet. It allows players to shift from defense to offense and often separates strong players from elite ones. As Collin Johns highlights, mastering this technique opens more opportunities to win rallies.

Impact of the Technique

Learning this shot requires practice and repetition, but once players master it, the forehand roll drop can become a dependable weapon. By combining mechanics, stance, and topspin, players can elevate their game and take greater control of matches.

News in Brief: Collin Johns Forehand Roll Drop Technique

Collin Johns explained the importance of the forehand roll drop, a topspin shot that helps control rallies in pickleball. With proper paddle angle, stance, and follow-through, the shot adds safety and pressure. Once mastered, it becomes a powerful tool that separates advanced players from the rest.

Why Top Pickleball Players Swear by the “Unfair” 7/11 Drill to Level Up Their Game

0
711 Pickleball Drill Training Method

7/11 Pickleball Drill Training Method: A new training method called the 7/11 Drill is helping pickleball players improve their skills by adding pressure to practice. The drill sets uneven scoring rules between two players, forcing both to focus, adjust, and compete harder than in standard training.

How the Drill Works

The 7/11 Drill begins with one player standing at the kitchen line while the other starts at the baseline. The baseline player begins the rally with a third-shot drop. After that, the point is played normally but with one difference:

The baseline player needs 7 points to win.
The kitchen player needs 11 points to win.

“At first glance, it feels unfair. But that’s the beauty of it: the imbalance forces you to adapt, focus, and grind in ways normal drilling doesn’t.”

Why It Pushes Players

The design gives each player a different challenge.
For the baseline player, the scoring advantage adds pressure to make the perfect third-shot drop. For the kitchen player, the uphill task requires patience, strong defense, and consistent play.

The drill makes every rally important. It forces players to think strategically, instead of just hitting shots without purpose.

Building Toughness and Skill

By making one player fight harder and the other protect an advantage, the 7/11 Drill strengthens both mental and physical aspects of the game. It helps improve concentration, adaptability, and confidence in competitive rallies.

The drill has gained attention because it feels like real match play while still being a practice tool. Players say it creates tougher habits and sharpens skills needed for tournaments.

Why It Matters

The 7/11 Drill shows how creative training methods can make pickleball practice more effective. Its use of uneven scoring pushes both players to develop strategy, discipline, and resilience. As more players use it, the drill could become a regular part of advanced pickleball training.

News in Brief: 7/11 Pickleball Drill Training Method

The 7/11 Pickleball Drill challenges players with uneven scoring to build pressure and sharpen focus. The baseline player needs 7 points to win, while the kitchen player must reach 11. Though it feels unfair, the format builds strategy, mental strength, and consistency, making it a valuable training tool.

Unlock Peak Performance: 3 Surprising Ways Pickleball Pros Find Mental Clarity Before a Match

0
Mental Clarity Pickleball Tips

Mental Clarity Pickleball Tips: Pickleball players often focus on skills like footwork, grips, and shot mechanics, but the mental side of the game is just as important. Staying calm and clear-headed before stepping on the court can make a major difference in performance, especially during tournaments.

Why Mental Clarity Matters

Many players spend hours improving technical skills but overlook mental preparation. The court is meant to be a place of focus and calm, but busy lives often bring stress and distractions. Finding ways to reset the mind before competing can help players feel more confident and ready.

Trust Your Preparation

The first key tip is to believe in the work already done. Much of the anxiety before a match comes from self-doubt. Players may feel they did not practice enough, but stressing over “would’ve, could’ve, should’ve” only hurts performance. Accepting the effort made allows players to start strong.

Take a Break from Pickleball

The second tip is to step away from the game before playing. Doing activities like visiting a coffee shop or exploring a new place can provide a break from the pressure. As the article notes, “Life is more than just pickleball!” Finding outlets beyond the court helps ease stress.

Try Meditation or Yoga

The third tip focuses on practices like meditation and yoga. Even ten minutes of mindfulness can help sharpen focus and regulate emotions. A short NSDR (non-sleep deep rest) session, available on platforms like YouTube, can refresh the body and mind in ways that caffeine cannot.

A post shared by Anna Bright (@annabright.pb)

The Bigger Picture

Pre-match nerves are natural for all players. However, by using tools like preparation, relaxation, and meditation, players can calm their thoughts and step onto the court with focus. Mental clarity is not about removing nerves completely but finding ways to manage them for the best possible results.

News in Brief: Mental Clarity Pickleball Tips

Pickleball players can benefit from mental preparation before matches. Key tips include trusting preparation, stepping away from the game to relax, and using meditation or yoga. These methods help calm nerves, improve focus, and give players the best chance to perform well in competition.

Unlocking Pickleball Mastery: The 4 Surprising Stages Every Player Must Conquer

0
Pickleball Skill Mastery Journey

Pickleball Skill Mastery Journey: Pickleball players move through four main stages of skill development: unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence. Each stage represents a step in learning, from not knowing what to improve, to building focus and technique, and eventually mastering the game until it feels automatic.

Stage 1: Unconscious Incompetence

At the start, many players don’t realize their weaknesses or the practice required to improve. Pickleball’s easy entry makes it possible for beginners to rally during their first games. This makes the sport welcoming but can create a false sense of ability. Progress at this stage comes from watching advanced play or receiving feedback from coaches and experienced players.

Stage 2: Conscious Incompetence

In this stage, players begin to see the real challenges of the game. They recognize their skill gaps and often feel frustrated. This awareness is important for growth because it sparks the motivation to practice. Focused drills, especially for specific shots, become key to improvement.

Stage 3: Conscious Competence

Players now perform important skills such as third-shot drops, drives, dinks, and counters. However, these moves still require effort and focus. To move forward, players should practice regularly with proper technique, seek feedback, and gradually add advanced strategies to their game.

Stage 4: Unconscious Competence

This stage reflects mastery, where skills feel natural and effortless. Players no longer think about mechanics; instead, they react to situations. Much like a quarterback in football reading a defense, high-level pickleball players rely on muscle memory built through thousands of repetitions to play instinctively.

Assessing Your Current Stage

Players can measure progress by looking at ratings, such as their DUPR score, or by tracking results in tournaments and leagues. They should notice which shots still require focus and which happen automatically. Honest self-assessment helps guide the right practice plan.

Why It Matters

Understanding these stages helps players set realistic goals and stay motivated. Moving from one stage to another requires patience, focus, and consistent practice. For beginners and advanced players alike, knowing where they stand ensures they can keep improving and enjoying the game.

News in Brief: Pickleball Skill Mastery Journey

Pickleball skill development follows four stages: unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence. Players progress from not knowing their weaknesses to performing skills automatically. Honest self-assessment, focused practice, and consistent play help players move forward. Each stage builds confidence and prepares athletes for long-term growth.

Learning from the Past

adidas Pickleball first entered the market with the Metalbone paddle line, which featured advanced design and technology. While innovative, it struggled to gain traction.

The AdiPower paddles build on that experience by focusing more on stability, control, and player feedback. Instead of pushing every detail to the extreme, adidas now aims to provide a dependable paddle for players who want both touch and power.

With this shift, adidas is ready for its comeback, holding to its message: “Always Return Stronger.”

adidas Pickleball launched its AdiPower paddle line, focusing on power, control, and consistency. Pro players Jaume Martinez Vich and CJ Klinger joined the brand, endorsing the new paddles. Teams from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania/ACT, and WA/SA/NT competed for national glory in a two-day event that ended with New South Wales and Queensland facing off in all three finals.

Road to the Finals

The tournament began months earlier with more than 1,200 players competing in local leagues around Australia. Winners advanced to regional qualifiers in June and state qualifiers in August, earning their chance to represent their state at the national stage.

At Pimpama, each state was represented by eight players—four men and four women—in each age division. Teams battled in men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, with every win earning one point. A “Master Breaker” tie-breaker decided matches locked at 4-4.

Competition Heats Up

By the close of Saturday’s four rounds, all teams were pushing hard for spots in the finals. Partnerships, some formed for the first time, quickly found rhythm as strategies developed. The atmosphere was electric, with courtside cheers of “c’mon” and “let’s go” echoing throughout the venue.

On Sunday morning, results confirmed the leaders: New South Wales 70+, Queensland 60+, and New South Wales 50+ all advanced directly into the finals. The semi-finals produced tense battles, setting up a dramatic showdown between New South Wales and Queensland across all three divisions.

Championship Matches

The finals were fiercely contested, with state pride driving every rally. Matches were close across all age groups, but by late Sunday afternoon, the national champions were decided and celebrated as the first-ever Australian Masters Cup winners.

Looking Ahead

Organizers highlighted the significance of the competition for both new and seasoned players. For some, it was their first taste of tournament play, while others saw it as another milestone in their pickleball journey.

Event organizer Brad Kluss reflected on the tournament, saying:

“As the organiser of the event, I am incredibly proud of the event we have delivered for you all, and I can’t wait to see all your faces, plus many more in 2026.”

The success of this year’s event means the Australian Masters Cup will return in 2026, with promises of an even bigger competition. Players are encouraged to rally behind their local clubs to prepare for the next edition.

Game Details

The tournament will supply balls, while players must bring their own paddles. Results will not be recorded against DUPR, allowing players to compete without affecting their ratings. The event promises a lively atmosphere. “Hydrate, caffeinate, and bring your A-game (and maybe a spare shirt for the sweat-fest). Expect a full day of dinks, drives, and drama. That’s why we’ll refund you in full up until registration closes. After that? Sorry champ, unless you’re abducted by aliens (with photographic proof), your fee is locked in.”

Sacramento Vintage Open Revives Pickleball’s Roots With Thrilling Wooden Paddle Showdown

0
Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open

Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open: The Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open gave fans and players a unique experience by bringing back wooden paddles for competition. The event, held in Sacramento in 2025, featured professional athletes playing with paddles that have not been common since Arlen Paranto introduced the composite paddle in 1984. None of today’s professional players had ever competed with wooden paddles, making this tournament a rare and exciting change.

Old-School Paddles, Old-School Tactics

The biggest difference with wooden paddles was the loss of power. Players found it much harder to hit winners with drives, overheads, or quick speedups. This shifted the focus to dinking, lobs, and smart angles. Years ago, the third shot drop was considered the most important shot in pickleball, but power paddles pushed the game toward drives and speed.

At the Vintage Open, there were more third shot drops than seen in years. Rallies were longer, patience was tested, and players needed careful shot-making. Instead of blasting through opponents, they had to earn points with strategy and consistency.

Long Games and Close Matches

With less power available, matches became closer and more drawn out. Players often had to fight off several match points before winning. All four bronze medal matches went to three games, and Saturday’s semifinals stretched late into the evening.

Because wooden paddles create less spin, roll dinks and topspin shots were harder to use. That reduced the chances of forcing errors. As a result, long dink rallies became the standard, and most games were closely contested from start to finish.

Veterans Find an Edge

Players with more experience and a style based on control rather than raw power thrived. The men’s doubles semifinal showed this clearly. JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier defeated Andrei Daescu and Collin Johns by relying on drops, dinks, and patient play.

Federico Staksrud claimed victory in singles, Jessie Irvine won two medals, Lea Jansen earned two medals, Collin Johns returned to the medal podium, and James Ignatowich also secured a medal. For many of these players, the return to a slower, skill-based game played to their strengths.

Future of Wooden Paddle Events

The Sacramento Vintage Open was designed as a one-time event. No other Professional Pickleball Association tournaments in 2025 will use wooden paddles. Organizers hope the Vintage Open can return in 2026 with even more players joining.

The event showed that pickleball can still offer variety and connect fans with its roots, even as modern equipment and power-driven styles dominate the game today.

News in Brief: Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open

The Pickleball Central Sacramento Vintage Open brought back wooden paddles for professional play, reviving older strategies and longer rallies. Veterans and finesse players gained an edge as matches stayed close and intense. While this was a one-time event in 2025, organizers hope the unique tournament will return in 2026.

Panas Malaysia Cup 2025 Sets Record Prize as Pickleball Ignites a Racquet Sports Revolution in Asia

Panas Malaysia Cup 2025 Sets Record

Panas Malaysia Cup 2025 Sets Record: Pickleball gained a major boost in Asia as the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour Asia: Panas Malaysia Cup 2025 took place from September 24 to 28 at the 9Pickle Setia Alam Championship Court in Shah Alam, Selangor. The event featured a record prize pool of over US$150,000 (RM633,000), the largest ever for a pickleball tournament in Asia.

Sports Can Grow Together

World No.4 Christian Alshon, a former tennis singles champion from the United States who switched to pickleball in 2021, said the sport does not threaten other racquet games.

“I think tennis can really help pickleball grow. It does not have to be one against the other. I think racquet sports need to unite – tennis, padel, pickleball, badminton and ping pong. I love them all,”(Christian Alshon).

Alshon stressed that different racquet sports can share players and fans, helping each other grow instead of competing.

Mihika’s victory marked another milestone in her career and highlighted her continued dominance in Indian pickleball.

A Special Win in Chennai

Chennai holds special memories for Mihika Yadav, who was previously a professional tennis player with major wins in the city. Returning with a pickleball paddle, she described her latest victory as particularly meaningful. “Chennai has always been very special to me. I used to play tennis before, I was a professional tennis player, and I’ve won some big tennis tournaments here. And now to win a pickleball singles event in this city – very, very special,” she said.

Support from Sponsors and Family

Mihika credited her sponsors and loved ones for her success. “It feels absolutely amazing. First of all, I want to thank my sponsor JOOLA for the amazing paddle, apparel, and their continuous faith and support in me. Thank you Hemal sir for all your support throughout,” she told Pickleball Now. She added, “My lucky charms this tournament are definitely my mixed doubles partner Amol Ramchandani – I give him all the credit for today’s win. And my mom is also here, so that makes this victory even more special.”

On-Court Performance

During the final, Mihika Yadav remained focused and executed her plans well. “I think I stayed solid throughout the match. Whatever I had planned, whatever I had prepped for, I managed to execute. And yeah, that’s what helped me win today,” she said.

She defeated Snehal Kishor Patil, who had earlier won the women’s doubles title and reached three finals over the weekend. The seaside facility also impressed Mihika. “It’s a stunning, stunning facility. I wish this was a permanent structure because it’s so pretty, it’s by the beach. Kudos to Rise Up Championship. Thank you for having me. It’s been a fabulous event — I’ve enjoyed every minute on court. And I can’t wait to be back for some more,” she added.

Looking Ahead

The Chennai victory adds to Mihika Yadav’s growing list of achievements. Earlier this year, she played in the inaugural PPA Tour Asia across Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Japan. She also won gold at the Dubai Open and earned bronze at the Monsoon Pickleball Championships.

Mihika is now preparing for more competitions. “I am now looking forward to compete in a few international events — some PPAs, some APPs. And of course we have our state championship selections coming up, and the (IPA) Nationals later in November. Lot of exciting events to look forward to,” she said.

High-Quality Event and Competition

“Firstly, I would like to thank Chennai for holding this event. It’s a beautiful event and the way they have done the event is spectacular. It’s right on the sea, beautiful. It’s as good as a big international sporting event,” Ashish Khanna said. He also highlighted the competition: “We have got all the top players of India playing this event. It’s a closed draw event, and the quality of the sport has been fantastic. I just saw the semi-finals with the ladies — it was a great event.”

Rapid Growth Across India

Ashish Khanna said pickleball’s popularity is rising fast. “The growth of pickleball has been phenomenal. And it’s not going to stop. It’s going to be exponentially rising. The number of courts started with a handful about five years ago, and now we’ve got multiple thousand courts in India. The number of people playing pickleball is increasing rapidly.”

Accessibility and Appeal

Khanna noted the sport’s broad appeal. “I think it’s a new-age sport. People are looking for newer activities. The attraction of the sport has been phenomenal. It’s a great community sport. Everybody who starts playing pickleball, nobody wants to leave it. They want to keep getting better and better at it.”

Fitness and Recreation Benefits

Pickleball also offers health benefits. “While a lot of people start the sport as recreation, they don’t realise it’s very physically inducing. The number of calories you burn is very close to what you burn in singles tennis or squash. All pickleball courts in the country are completely jam-packed,” Khanna said.

Future of Pickleball in India

When asked about pickleball replacing cricket, Khanna said firmly: “No sport is going to replace any other sport. But definitely pickleball is going to make a big mark for itself. With the number of people playing, the enthusiasm that I see, it’s fantastic.” He encouraged newcomers: “Come down and start playing pickleball. You won’t leave it. And you’re going to get 100 more people to come down and play. Pickleball is going to be there for the future.”

It was a very tough match but then we held it together from start to end. We had a good strategy and we killed it,” she said. Snehal Kishor Patil, partnering with Joshika for the first time, admitted initial doubts: “I was a little excited and I played with Joshika for the first time and I didn’t feel that our coordination would be good or not. Still, we went to the finals and we played a good match. We made a comeback, we were a little down and a little up, but the game was good.”

The Chennai tournament was also Snehal’s first visit to the city. “The arrangement was also very good and I came to Chennai for the first time to play a tournament. I felt very good,” she said. Joshika, with a tennis background, has adapted quickly to pickleball: “Even if you are a badminton or any racquet sport player, I think pickleball is a very easy game to learn because it’s almost the same hand-eye coordination, the movements and everything. The more pickleball you play, the better you get at it.”

Despite being last-minute partners, Snehal and Joshika remain confident. “We are very hopeful. Actually, we were the last-minute partner. I was not even supposed to play the tournament because I was sick. I thought, okay, let me just give it a shot because she wanted to—and then here we are, through to the finals. So, hopefully, we will win. We will do it,” Snehal said.

Learning Experiences for Opponents

Urvi Abhyankar and Shreya Chakraborty, who lost in the semifinals, said they learned from the match. “Honestly, it wasn’t our best day. It wasn’t our best match. We could have done much better,” said Shreya. Urvi added, “We played a very solid game in the morning, the quarters—we made a good upset. But I think this is our first time pairing up together. It’s a lot of learning to do and definitely not the best match, but it’s only going up from here. We will be coming back really strong, I feel.”

As the women’s doubles final approaches, both pairs are ready to bring skill, strategy, and energy to the court. The match promises excitement for players and fans alike on Chennai’s golden shores.

Pickleball Fitness Benefits for All Ages

Pickleball Fitness Benefits for All Ages: Bengaluru’s Kavya Jayaprakash highlighted pickleball’s fitness appeal at the Rise Up Championship – Pickleball By The Bay 2025, India’s largest IPA-sanctioned PWR 1000 event in Chennai. Competing in women’s singles and doubles, she called the sport a great exercise that is accessible for all ages while minimizing injury risk.

A Low-Impact, Full-Body Workout

“The net, first of all, is very low and the bounce will be very low as well as it is a plastic ball. Hence, the players have to bend to play the shots. It is an excellent exercise for stomach and belly and cardio. The players run a lot. And the court is very small. The movements will be bit less compared to other sports like basketball, tennis and all. So, the risk of injury is less. So any age category people can play,”

Kavya Jayaprakash told Pickleball Now.

Her comments underline why pickleball is growing so fast in India: it combines moderate physical activity with low injury risk, making it ideal for beginners, seniors, and young players alike.

Inclusivity and Lifestyle

On the men’s side, Jaishnu Krishnan, who played in the singles draw, agreed with Kavya.

“Pickleball is a sport where it can be played no matter your age, so even if people are like 60, 70 or like 5, anybody can just take a paddle, run around the pickleball court and have fun with family and friends. And it is also like you are getting your body moving, so it just keeps you fit and helps you stay healthy,” (Jaishnu Krishnan).

Both players emphasized that pickleball is more than a game—it promotes fitness, social interaction, and family fun. Its accessibility and full-body movement are attracting players across generations.

Growing Popularity in India

With low risk of injury, easy-to-learn rules, and fitness benefits, pickleball is quickly becoming a preferred sport in India. From children learning the game to older adults staying active, the sport is proving to be both inclusive and health-focused, setting the stage for continued growth nationwide.

Dylan Frazier credited their comeback to staying bold despite the early deficit.

“I think we just had to commit to the speedups. I felt like we were doing really well in the fast-paced exchanges.

I just feel like once I start pulling, anything that goes straight up JW’s way gets eaten up by his hands, so it was just a matter of playing a bit more aggressive.”(Dylan Frazier)

The victory sends both players into two championship matches in Sacramento. JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier will compete against each other in the mixed doubles final and reunite for the men’s doubles title match. Their run shows their strength both as teammates and as opponents.

  • Sundays: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The courts will remain closed at all other times. These restrictions will stay in effect indefinitely unless future changes are approved.

Updated Rules to Address Concerns

The resolution also introduces strict rules to protect the site and reduce neighborhood impacts. Among the key regulations: no climbing or bypassing locked gates, no animals except service animals, and no food, glass, alcohol, or smoking. Skateboards, scooters, and bikes are banned, along with public urination. Tournaments, private instruction, amplified sound, and the placement of any structures require prior City approval.

Community Feedback and Next Steps

During the September 18 meeting, city staff shared reports from trial periods and residents voiced their concerns. A community survey will be distributed to nearby households to collect more feedback and guide future decisions.

City Statement and Early Challenges

In an update released Saturday, the City stated:

“After persistent noise and crowd impacts at the Hidden Valley Sport Courts, the City changed the hours to address quality-of-life impacts negatively affecting residents living near the courts.

This was a very difficult decision for the City, and we recognize that no single solution can fully satisfy everyone affected by this matter.”

City officials also reported problems soon after the new rules began, including unlocked and dismantled gates and unauthorized pickleball play during closed hours. The City warned that these incidents

“not only compromise the safety of the area, they will impact the City’s ability to keep the courts open if they continue.”

What It Means for Residents

The new schedule aims to balance recreational use with neighborhood peace, but future changes could occur based on survey results and compliance. Continued violations may lead to stricter enforcement or further restrictions on play.

News in Brief: Hidden Valley Sports Courts Pickleball Hours

Martinez approved Resolution 25-125 to reduce noise and crowd issues at the Hidden Valley Sports Courts. Starting September 24, 2025, the courts will open only three days a week with strict rules. Early vandalism and rule-breaking threaten future access, and a community survey will help decide any further changes.
